When preparing to receive serve, you always stare downward at the
court-surface, not your opponent, until the serve itself; why do you do
that, and do you run through some sort of mental exercise while doing so?

Take a deep breath, take a walk, cool off, plot a bit, and serve again.

Dear Mimus
In answer to your question, I always check the court for mice before
playing a point, as I would hate to step on one.

Yours,
