Subject: A week before AO

Before this week, I had all of the top 4 pretty much equal favourites
for AO. Maybe Nadal slightly behind, he is the only one of them who
has never made HC slam final.

After this week:

Nadal losing to Monfils didn't make him look any stronger.

Djokovic is difficult to evaluate. He has played only one match, so
hard to say much. But this racket changing thing doesn't sound good,
so I think I have to put him slightly behind too.

Murray is playing the best tennis at the moment, but the difference to
Federer wasn't that big yesterday. The main questions are

1. How Murray handles mentally being the favourite and how he handles
the final generally if he makes it.

2. How much Federer can improve at AO (last year he generally played
better at slams), and does his experience help if he plays Murray.

I can't predict anything for Federer any more, but he looked to be
moving very well and trying to play his very aggressive game. Also he
looked to be trying to be aggressive on his backhand and rush to the
net a lot.
At the end of any day, Federer's style of play is a little risky, if
it clicks well, he wins easily if it doesn't he could be in trouble if
he didn't try to hang on there as he did in the five sets win of QF in
USO.

It will be about the form of the day and who wants it more.

1.a) Is his back bothering him? I didn't watch his match with Roddick.
How did he look?

How about the women's side?

Well, neither the Sydney or AO web sites say she's out, but I bet the
newspaper is right.

Maybe, but it's turned out to be wrong on a couple of occasions after I've
quoted it here. I would want confirmation.

I am sure the newspaper is right she is out of the tournament. But if
she was on Monday's schedule originally, that must mean she is not in
the hospital.

Well if she was scheduled to play Alize Cornet on Monday, I would

She has dropped out, just not the way you thought.
2-6 4-6
It could have been worse. She broke back a couple of times to get four games in
the 2nd set.

Wrong again I'd say, unless she only wanted to play Sydney.

I think she needs to go back to hospital:
Petrova v. Cornet 2-6 0-3 (in progress)

Any news on Petrova?

Nadia Petrova is scheduled to play Aliz Cornet in the 1st round of Sydney
on Monday.
She also entered the Doubles as a WC partnering Svetlana Kuznetsova.

According to today's Age Petrova is out of the AO, due to the virus.

Great, maybe we'll _finally_ get the story on this so-called viral
meningitis episode, which I've come to doubt that diagnosis on . . . .

I don't care how mild a case it turned out to be, I really find it hard to
believe you can be back on track in tennis-training and playing pro tennis
in less than a month . . . .

Didn't notice any problems. He played really well, he is many levels
better than Roddick these days, so just cruised through the match.

Tricky and still pretty uninteresting. I was hoping Sharapova would
come back in good form, but she has withdrawn from some tune ups, so
doesn't look that good. Ivanovic is still a mess. Don't know about
Jankovic. But I am afraid Serena Williams will win.

She has also withdrawn from the AO. Her shoulder still isn't right. A big loss
for the tournament.

Serena W. had to save four match points in beating Samantha Stosur today, but
she can be hot or cold any time. The rest of the week will be more revealing of
her form.

Isn't Serena still injured? I thought she pulled out of the Hopman Cup.

I'd love to see Dementieva win, but she'll find a way to blow it.
