Nalbandian, Stepanek, Cilic and Murray all won their tournaments before
AO. I think we can say that all of them have failed compared to the
expectations before AO started - maybe Cilic performed as expected.
Anyway, it seems like winning tuneups is no advantage. That means Del
Potro, the champion in Auckland, will not beat Federer :-)

PS.

Who wouldn't enjoy a "coming next" a la Lendl???
Guess Murray won't! Even if he wasn't to win at Wimb... Any UK player
reaching the Wim (and non-grass multi-slam winner) final would have
instant GOAT in the eyes her Majesty's citizens.
Lendl's legacy looks so much better than many others, lot less "hype",
but so strong overall.

Share & Enjoy,

early 2009 tuneup king, so far = Murray...
for 03-07 king was Federer, even for tuneup; but on clay where Rafa
was king of surface, no matter the event.

Maybe not but he's still a potential great.

Coulda said the same thing about Lendl early in his career too.

In that case we don't have to worry about Murray winning his first slam
until 2011.
