Highlights of Mac v Jimbo 1984 USO semi.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y1303JCI

Some points;

- Mac seems to have every shot in the book, including a Sampras-like
slam dunk.

- Jimbo is an amazing returner - far superior to any player today.
Makes Federer's bunts look comic.

- Mac's insistence on charging the net despite being scorched numerous
times by Jimbo's returns & passing shots shows tremendous balls. I can
see Federer or any player today shrivelling nuts into a vagina v Jimbo &
sticking to baseline.

- The entertainment value, compared to today's game, is through the
roof. Every point is different & you never know what's coming from both
guys.

- Both guys are into the net at 1st possible opportunity, even though
they both get scorched many times by ripping passing shots. There are
some long rallies but that's because they are hitting so deep there is
no chance to get in. It's like watching tennis from a different planet -
amazing stuff & what made tennis a great spectator sport.

- Rafa is easily the toughest player in today's game, but he takes a
back seat to both Mac & Jimbo. It's easy to forget how great these past
players were. If the ATP wants to keep fans they need to keep these
matches locked away - fans will feel ripped off if they see them &
compare to today's game.

The only advantage I can see in modern game is Federer's flick bh pass &
Rafa's huge spin & coverage on a clay court. Everything else goes to
earlier eras.

Mac has better touch, volleys & angles than any player today. Jimbo
easily has better returns than any player today.

What's funny is I used to see Jimbo as a bit of a bumrooter, but he'd be
the preeminent net rusher in today's game. I guess he had to come in as
Mac would be there in a flash & kill him, like '84 Wimbledon final 61 61 62.

Merry xmas

thanks for the video. I agree with your points. However, it's the
strings and racquet technology that killed tennis, not a lack of
"balls" from the players.

...still waiting for a Hoad clip from you. how about posting a couple
Hoad clips so we can all see what classic Aussie tennis looked like?

Let's see ... "Talent goat" McEnroe, in his career year and at his
favorite event, struggled mightily through five sets and barely
escaped with his life against old man Connors, who was a decade past
his own best year. From this we know for a fact that peak Connors
woulda waxed peak "talent goat" easily -- I'm thinkin' 6-2, 6-3, 6-2?

The only advantage I can see in 1984 game is McEnroe's touch half-
volley & Lendl's huge scowl & consistency on a hard court. Everything
else goes to 1974 era.

Only explanation for preferring 80s wimps to 70s champs is WHEIBS --
Whisper's Hero Era Is Best Syndrome.

:-)

You should have left it at that. The rest is not as good.

Why can't you just post the link and let people judge things for
themselves?

To the whole match? It's about 3 gigs.
