If it's only ~ an hour late and there hasn't been any breaking news
'Federer hit by a bus' I usually allow the picks.

Can't recall your situation, you prob. submitted well into the first
day after matches were over.

Are you saying that Hazelwood is a cheat like his idol Rafa?

Hops, *not that this matters in terms of his score* from here on in,
but it's the principle that matters.

A couple of years ago, when I didn't know the rules at the time, I
tried to enter your contest after the tournament had begun its first
day.
I was quickly put in my place by several people here, saying: "No way
buddy, you're too late".

Why is it that you have taken Hazelwood's choices that he made after
the tournament was more than 30 minutes under way?

If you are to use his choices at all, they should be from Jan 17,
2009, no?

You are wrong. Are you an AOL lamer or what ? My post was send just
before play started. It's moot anyway as both Simon and Tsonga lost at
precisely the same stage.

I agree. Hazel needs to be kicked to the kerb - cheaters should be
banned for 1 year.

Sakari and "b" picked Vera Zvonareva, and amazingly she is in the
semis, for the first time ever I think? It's also a little surprising
how many of the posters have picked Dinara Safina to be either the
winner or the runner up.

The possibilities in that half were pretty much Jankovic, Ivanovic,
Safina and Zvonareva. I knew Ivanovic was in bad form, I had a feeling
Jankovic was in bad form too. It was between Safina and Zvonareva. As
I said at the time, Zvonareva was a bit of a gamble, but I was very
impressed by her late last year. So these two made SF, and it turned
out it was Safina who won it. Zvonareva complained that the conditions
were different with the roof closed, and she didn't have time to get
used to it. And Serena made the final from the other half. I am pretty
happy with my women's picks.

For me, since I don't really follow much of women's tennis, it's mostly
wishful thinking (Dementieva picks, Henin at USO, etc...)

I picked Azarenka in the USO contest and got burned. That's why I knew
not to pick Wozniacki this time around.

The fact is the women are almost un-pickable. If Venus or Serena play
their best they'll win, but of course they can always make a slew of
UEs and lose to most anyone. And then there doesn't seem to be any
other really great player out there who can be depended on to even
make the semis let alone the finals or win the thing.

Something wrong with the women's list. I don't see anyone picking
Zvonareva as the winner, and only me and one other entry as finalist.
Same with Azarenka and Wozniacki.

How do you explain your women's picks then? JJ over VW. Now that's
really smart!
Come to think of it, you had the same 4 picks for USO too, but
with VW over JJ.
Is that laziness or did you confuse #2 Serena with #9 Venus?
Also, you seem to blindly pick Rafa over Roger every time, irresp
of who is/ was #1.

Easy to explain. JJ has the game to be No.1 & win a couple slams, but
seems she doesn't have the right frame of mind. I'm guessing she felt
Bartoli didn't deserve her full efforts & she'd be intimidated by her
No.1 ranking - that is dumb on her part. I may have to downgrade her
prospects based on her poor thinking ability (much like I gave up on
Vaidisova for same reasons) - she's more interested in being a star than
a true champion.

Venus just played a very dumb match, which of course is her career
trademark - but I figured she'd get a clue with all her experience &
getting close to 30. Looks very much a case of a leopard never changing
spots.

Serena has played crap all year but amazingly is still in the draw. As
long as she hangs around you can't count her out, but she has bucked the
odds so far. Dementieva should beat her, but with her there is never
any certainty.

It would be dumb on JJ's part, but I think the bigger issue is that she
apparently has put on extra muscle and bulk over the break, and she's not
moving as well as she was. (She has said as much herself.)

But VW has never won the AO and has only once made the final. No clear
reason why her record in Australia is so poor - unless she simply likes to
take a long break and doesn't prepare for it seriously.

SW has, but at this point given her competitive instincts you have to
figure she's the favorite. Still want Dementieva to win it, though.

And I thought that Safina beats Dementieva would be a unique pick. So

Surprising only skriptis & I picked Rafa to beat Fed in the final - this
ng seems to be getting dumber by the day. They are ranked no.1 & 2 for
a reason.

They are, but Nadal isn't #1 because of his performance at hard court

I'm surprised only 5 picked Nadal as the winner. Apparently he has much

He's never made the final of a hard court Slam. I think that was probably
more the key factor. Until last year, Nadal wasn't even in the top five on
hard courts. (Last year he was in the top two, by the numbers.) And I
would say that this event he's playing better on hard courts than I've
ever seen him do before.

He's always had that potential with the way he plays. USO he was
clearly flat after a gruelling year with huge successes - he does get
better on all surfaces each year if you pay attention. He's gone from
beating Fed comfortably on clay to crucifying him in FO final & not
dropping a set, barely losing at Wimbledon to winning (almost straights
if no rain delay), & with no big s/v guys around it stands to reason he
was going to improve on HC's too.

Only question is how many yrs can he keep this up? What are his goals &
how strong the desire?

For me, it was Murray's performance in the past months. If it had been djoker
on Nadal's side and Murray on Federer's, I'd probably picked Murray def Nadal.
After making his first slam final, I didn't expect the favorite tag to weigh
him down so much.

The heat was always going to be a factor, + Rafa has record of HC slam
improvement every year. He's also unlikely to lose to Murray 2 slam
semis in a row .

Rafa is always much fresher at start of yr then he is at USO, & with
extra motivation (ie revenge) watch out.

As far as facing Fed in slam finals you'll note he never has a problem
getting totally focussed - much like Sampras got up for Agassi as he saw
him as the ultimate challenger.

Those things tipped it for me & suggested Murray was up against it -
this time.

bob has unhealthy work/life balance - works hard for some months then

DUMB surely is bragging about your picks when you are tied for 25th in
