Hate to say it, but it's true.

Rafa's a true sportsman for still being out there, especially in some
meaningless tournament

Have to hand it to him, for going the distance and eating the bagel. Not
something Djoke would do.

Djokovic has retired for things that wouldn't have affected his
longerm health (like sore throat, or heat cramps, etc.).

Retiring due to knee problems is justified.

Old retirement standard: play unless you cannot physically continue,
or are risking permanent injury.

New retirement standard: play unless you cannot realistically win the
match.

Djoker retirement standard: play unless you probably will not win the
match.

Nadal seems to be adhering to the old school standard, so good for
him.

Yes, and actually I wouldn't blame him for retiring in this one.

PS.

You should only retire when injured and an injury is when you twist an
ankle, pull a muscle etc. and you literally cannot continue e.g. Mary
Pierce. Nadal is not "injured" - he's just sore and hurting after playing a
lot of tennis on hardcourt recently.
