Federer was just as tetchy off the court as he was on it, reacting
angrily to suggestions that he gave up in the closing moments of the
2hr 5min struggle and paying Murray the most backhanded of compliments
in response to question's about the Scot's No 1 potential.

"If he carries on playing the way he is he will have his shot [at the
top ranking], said Federer. "I would hope, though, that if he were to
become world No 1 he would win a grand slam first, not like on the
women's side. No disrespect to [Jelena] Jankovic [who claimed world No
1 status without winning a single grand slam title].

"Especially after the No 1s we have had in the last few years. It took
Rafa [Nadal] five grand slams before he became No 1. The question is
whether he [Murray] is going to win a grand slam, well 'yes'.

"He has got a chance the next few years and as the years go by I guess
his chances increase because he is becoming a better player. But there
are a few other guys out there who want their first slam, not only
him."

He's pissed off that he keeps losing to Murray so he's trying to dig
at him by pointing to his lack of Slam
titles to this point. He probably won't be able to do that for much
longer.

What if Rafa said about Fed possibly regaining the No. 1 ranking "it'd
be a great achievement, but it'd be nice
if the No. 1 player had a winning record over his main rivals."

What did he say wrong?!

He said he wishes Murray to win a slam, did I miss anything?

I love it! Haa...it's so true.

Bet S. Williams liked the comment as well.

Tell that to the tennis journalists trying to beatify the guy.

Here's news; he hates losing. All great champions hate losing.

Really, what do you people expect someone of his stature to do? Jump
in joy, celebrate Murray's victory by singing and dancing and drinking
beer? Smoke a cigar?

Did Sampras do that when losing?

"If he carries on playing the way he is he will have his shot [at the
top ranking], said Federer. "I would hope, though, that if he were to
become world No 1 he would win a grand slam first"

There's no 'but' or even a 'yes' there. Only his opinion. You Fed-
haters unite on the basis of confirmation bias. Every piece of
information is identified and interpreted in a way that confirms your
preconceptions. All the rest is overlooked or dismissed as irrelevant.

The quote above can also be interpreted as a great compliment to
people lacking this 'quality' that combines you.

If he wanted to make a backhanded compliment he could have said
something like 'Murray deserved to win today as he gave the bigger
effort, a much bigger effort than me'.

What he actually said was that he hoped Murray would win a slam before
getting to number one. How you Fedhaters interpret this is really of
no consequence.

There was no 'but'

Fed was asked if Murray could be #1. He said 'yes'.
Asked if Murray would win a slam, he said 'yes'.

The comment in question was Fed saying he hoped Murray would win a
slam before becoming #1.

Don't be dim. Those are the kinds of comments he only makes when he
loses. If he had
won the match, then everything's sunny and he has no need to pay
Murray any backhanded
complements.

Exactly. Next we will witness fedfans saying that this was a very
gracious comment by Federer.

Hmm, I would have to say it didn't sound very gracious either, but at the

Sure, but the timing of this honesty is suspect. Seems to be malicious

innocent bystanders to make himself feel better - this time it's
Jankovic, next time could be Edberg.

Are you fucking retarded? What's so evil in his comments? Is he a sore
loser for what he said about jankovic? What does jankovic have to do
with his defeat?

He shares his doubts whether Murray will win a slam after a loss to him.
However you look at it that doesn't sound graceful comment.

Maybe he was trying to tell Murray not to become overconfident.

Well, given the new ranking system, it seems to me more likely that slam
winners will hit the top spot.
