It will be Federer's 18th Grand Slam final, one short of Ivan Lendl's
record of 19, and gives him the opportunity to draw level with Pete
Sampras' mark of 14 major titles.

"I didn't know I reached my 18th final. People forget about Ivan and
how great he was," said the 27-year-old.

"He had an unbelievable career and it's nice to be getting close to
him."

Exactly. Fed knows all of the records, just doesn't want to appear an
obsessive dork.

Federer is a very intelligent guy. The slammists are incredible bozos.
The worst kind of dimwits you meet on the Internet. The ones who are
not worth to shine shoes of great players like Lendl or Federer.

At this stage of Federer's career, I doubt that he could make enough
additional slam finals to end up with a .500 record, let alone a
losing record, even if he tanked every one he made. The turnoff to
Lendlville was miles back. :)

Yes .. i should have said ".. learned the lesson of lendl's career, and
succeeded in making sure it didn't happen to him". :)

LOL. Fed is already far greater than Lendl. No one wants an 8-11 slam
final record.

Fed understands very well that if you make 19 slam finals but lose 11 of
them, that people "tend to forget" how great you were.

He's learned the lesson of Ivan's career and is determined to not let it
happen to him.

Sure, because everyone has forgotten about Lendl, right? There is more to
greatness than slams.

There is more to life than slams, sure, I don't hold anythgin against Safin
for that matter.

But there is very little if anything more to greatness than slams.
