That's a bit unfair - Nadal didn't play anywhere near as badly in that
Wimbledon set. He twice had Federer 15-40 on serve for a start.

Federer broke Nadal with some good play and then broke again at 5-2 by
generally being aggressive (particularly on second serve returns,
ironically enough!)

What about Estoril? Oh, wait a minute, he's not playing that
one ... :-)

Federer should not have gone to the fifth set.

He was up a break in the first set. In the third set he had too many
chances to break, couldn't get it done.

Even Achilles had an Achilles heel. :)

There's a difference between a specific and a general weakness. A
contestant in the "World's Strongest Man" competition might have
somewhat poor grip strength, or a bad back, that might hinder his
performance in certain events. Overall, however, he would still be an
enormously strong guy. Federer has a specific mental problem that
involves Nadal, and it got the better of him in the fifth set of this
year's AO final. It doesn't always cripple him -- coming back from two
sets down in a Wimbledon final to almost win the match is no easy
feat. But regardless of the pervasiveness of his Nadal problem, it's
still quite different from a general mental weakness, such as
Djokovic's tendency to quit or Kuznetsova's habit of choking (Bud
Collins said, "She will find a way to lose." Bud's getting nasty in
his dotage.).

I see you don't give up on labeling Djokovic as a mental weakling.
For me it's like saying Sampras was mentally weak because he couldn't
sustain grueling FO schedule.

Yes, I find it shocking that people can say Fed's not mentally tough,
if they're even being serious
that is.

Lost three finals on clay to Nadal, one Wimbledon to Nadal in five
sets (could have gone his way), and one AO to Nadal in five sets
(could and should have gone his way).

This final was an exact replica of Wimbledon 2007 final.
One guy serving better, always staying one set ahead, and evetually winning
the match after saving break points early in the fifth and breaking his
oponent two times in the final set.

Even though the other guy seemed to have won his sets (2 and 4) more easily
and more convincigly, ie, not winning his sets in tiebraks /or 7:5/.

So if AO 2008 "should have gone to Federer" then Wimbledon 2007 "should have
gone to Nadal".

Nadal had his chances in that match for sure, but it's ridicilous to claim
he should have won that match when he lost 6-2 in the fifth, losing two
serves.
Same with Federer here.

Should have? Federer played a terrible fifth set, and deserved to
lose.

Nadal played a similarly awful fifth set in the '07 Wimbledon, and
deserved to lose that.

++ Sure. Only Fed gets easy draws. No one else. Ever. Right. SURE.

Facts tell us Federer's consistent and in finals all the time... and
has managed to win 13 of those pesky slams so far.

Not bad.

What is the point of either making or soliciting predictions?

Exactly. Winning one slam this year would be a huge achievement for
Fed. We are not in 2006 anymore. Wake up.

He reaches finals coz of easy draws and a very favorable schedules.
Once he reaches the final he is tested for the very first time vs a
top player and of course he loses! Duh.

Fed said he would be satisfied with a year like 2008. His goal is one
slam this year. Dude is getting old. Rafa, Murray and Nole are much
younge than the Swiss.

It is true that Federer fans are crying but you are panicking.
Federer could get one or more slams in 2009 and get his 15 slams
before he hangs it up. Pretty scary :)

Damn straight.

Sampras never won 3 slams in a year.

He almost never won two either. Once ? Twice st the most ?

Sampras was a one slam a year giant. So if Fed only wins one it's a
major problem ?

Why ? Because he is challenging Sampras for the most years with one

The reality is Federer lost last year in the SF of AO. This year he
almost won it with a bad seving day (50%).
It does not make sense for me to write him off.
His level of play starting 2009 is at much higher level than his peak
in 2008. It was simply a bad serving day.
I see his chances about 57% in Wimbledon and 52% in USO.

I always wonder what might have happened had Nadal not improved
dramatically between Hamburg and French. At Hamburg, Nole was matching
him stroke for stroke and could easily have been beaten. At French, he
just got beat badly even though he probably played even better than
Hamburg - that was when I realized how good Nadal has become. That
defeat, coupled with the Queens loss have really done a lot of damage
to Nole's confidence and swagger...

I think Fed will win no slams or just 1 slam this year. He is clearly
in decline.
