"You have four or five years where everybody praises you for all the
things you do," Federer said in Swiss-German to a select group of
Swiss reporters, "and then, all of a sudden, you have to answer
questions about other players, what makes them so unique and special
and what's the problem you have with them. When you have to do that in
every country and in all the languages I speak, then it's not much
fun, I can tell you.

"It's the same here with all the questions about Andy. He's a great
player, no doubt. Everybody knows it and I said that about him a
hundred times. But after the tenth time they want me to say it again,
but in another way =96 and that's what I don't like."

++ You have to admit the phrase "in all the languages I speak" was
sort of a funny take on it though...

Not a thing. This bozo promised to never post here if Federer wins the
Australian. Is there a better reason to root for Federer?
Rafa is my favorite but in this case, I make an exception and root for
Federer.

Isn't that but obvious? I mean, if I am asked 'why are your
observations so prophetic?', I can break it down for them.
But if I am asked 'Why does Whisper make such a fool of
himself all the time?' I can answer just once - saying he is
only being himself. How many answers can I give to questions
about others?

How do you get that from his comments?
I mean, "Having to say the same thing over and over, in different
languages is not fun..."
How is that controversial?
(Ok, I know you are trolling. I just have some time on my hands)

I'm with you. Wilander remarked when he became #1 that he was surprised to
find how many demands there were on his time - and he didn't speak four
languages fluently and he wasn't the most charistmatic #1 - and he wasn't
#1 for all that long.

I've interviewed a lot of people who've been interviewed a lot, and it's
very hard to find anything to ask them that they haven't answered a
thousand times - and they sound like they're on autopilot. In the
situation of tennis tournaments, where there are hundreds of journalists
and they all want time with Federer, he basically is going to give very
few one-on-ones and when he does they're going to be like five minutes
long and there are hundreds of journalists who all want quotes from him,
hence the press conferences.

It is not a situation where you can get to know someone at all (unless you
cover the tour every week for years and they get used to seeing you and
get a sense that you write about them fairly), and you can't develop a
rapport and find your way to questions that actually interest them. You
have think fast on your feet, and you have to start by asking the
questions your editor wants quotes about. Right now, that's Murray. And
everyone wants him to say a little differently than he did before.

Federer is generally considered the most gracious of interviewees, which
is a good trick considering that because of his linguistic ability he does
twice as many interviews as someone like Nadal does (English and spanish)
and four times what someone like Roddick does (English only). And right
now he's being asked the following:

-how does he feel going into the AO

-what about that Murray, eh?

If there's time, they'll ask about Nadal and Djokovic.

And not necessarily in that order.

Shows he is some sort of Narcissist in constant need of approval.

That's dumb. Once you get older the media buttwipes are like vultures
getting ready for the carcass. And they ask and ask and ask about when
you're retiring, how many problems you're having, etc etc. It's because it
becomes an "acceptable story" for them. Time was that would happen around
32 or something. Now it's like 25. This happened to Sampras as well. I
don't remember him complaining about it, but someone should. Essentially
it's age discrimination. The game is tilted young and tries to push out
anyone past 25. That's ludicrous and you should be outraged too.

Davenport got pretty sick of being asked when she was going to retire, and
a number of other players have been quite open about that.

And then no one ever asked Henin about retiring and BANG! there she went.

So now they'll ask even younger, just in case.

So...what exactly is wrong with what Federer said?

You'll note he never gets sick of answering questions about himself.

Logic grade: Fail.

I don't recall myself spending time in jail for tax evasion. Thus, I
like paying taxes.

WTF? Been taking logic lessons from Whisper? Like Joe said... Each post
seems dumber than the previous, and you just made some other pretty dumb
ones.

sampras never answered any about anybody nor anything. he was
*not* a good ambassador of the game at all.
