I'm sure Nadal will still win, but that was a bloody awful performance
from Simon for the first set and couple
of games.

Couldn't make a first serve, made tons of UEs and kept giving Rafa
easy forehands to hit. That's a recipe to
get massacred.

Hopefully it'll be more competitive from now on.

Yep.
Whiskey's simply happy that Nadal didn't loose.
Whenever whiskey's is high on hopes (Nadal will routine/blast...) is
mainly because he fears something.
Based on last Simon victory, Madrid, MS SF, no matter how "incredible"
Nadal has been said to play, our down-under friend was fearing Simon
to do it again; you know, what has been done once can be repeated.

I have no idea what your deal is. People on this ng were saying Nadal
was just going to rip Simon to
shreds. I simply observed that the first set result had as much to do
with Simon's poor play as with Nadal's strong play and that as soon as
that turned around I expected the match to be very close.

That is indeed what happened.

Analysis?
At best your post was "describing" what you saw in the first set.
Analysis are a little bit more, try some if you don't believe me.

By now Nadal won in straight...
He could never have hoped for better.
Simon broke back in the third, than had break point.
Nadal forced his chance in not droping a set (or two)

A better player would have taken 1-2 sets from Nadal tonight.

Agree, but he hasn't played since 2002 USO final.

Spot-on analysis. Simon was much better the second two sets and easily
coulda won set 2.

In fact, biased post.
From the second set is outbumrooting Nadal!
Who would have bet on such thing?
Nadal only the second set because he succeded in much shorter points
on the last Simon serve of that set.

Oh, and Simon just broke back in the third.
Now 4/3 Simon, Nadal to serve.
This set isn't finished yet.

Simon always loses the first set.
