That's somewhat out of Rafa's hands. If Fed serves well, hits his
forehand well, there's no way
Rafa can beat him in straights, imo.

If Rafa brings his A-game (eg last yr's FO final & 1st 2 sets Wimbledon
final) he will win in 3.

But what about Simon? Wasn't he your pick to make the final?

yep and that is why the ITF tossed both of them in rafas half. they
need to help old fart fed as much as they can these days. rigged draw.

Yep, the worst combo for Nadal is a "Simon & Tsonga".
The more Tsonga play to closer he gets from his past year level.

I can't take Verdasco as a so serious problem for Rafa...
He's still the king of spaniards, they hardly fight him for good (Moya
once, and Ferrero when he can play), they let play way too much.
A Verdasco / Nadal big fight is not impossible, and would be very
telling about Verdasco's "DC maturation"; it's just that I can't see
it happening so soon.
On the other hand, playing on HC might just gave Verdasco less
intimidation... so who knows?

i suspect that verdasco is nadals "wingman" and he did his job taking
out murray and now attempting the same with tsonga before "retiring"
and giving nadal the equivalent of a rest before going into the final.

I wonder if the radical back and forth set score against Andy Murray
meant anything about Verdasco. Or maybe it was more about Andy
Murray.

Good post, I agree on every point :-) !
Nadal has improved a lot his serve, and overall game.
He is a matchup problem for Fed, even on AO HC, that sure.

Roger is certainly capable of the win on anything but clay. He proved
that at Wimbledon by coming withing a whisker of winning another one
against Nadal.

We saw how he can leave it all out there when he really wants it. If
he doesn't get into a two set hole against Nadal as he did at
Wimbledon he could well win but I don't think so.

So much has been written about Roger learning how to beat Nadal but I
think that Nadal has really mastered the art of staying with Federer
and hanging around when things get tough long enough that his
persistence will win it for him.

I noticed this especially at Wimbledon. Nadal was being outplayed in
the 5th but he just concentrated upon holding serve and playing it
point by point even when Roger was taking it to him on some points.

You notice the guys who don't mind hanging around like Nadal and
Murray and even Simon and Willy. They do OK against Federer. The big
bangers like Del Potro, Roddick and Blake don't manage near as well.

If Tsonga manages to take Nadal out I think he will lose to Federer.

You have to be aggressive to beat Nadal. I think it's better to hang
back against Federer.

Yes I think this is correct. Federer defends too well for Tsonga. Tsonga
is a big banger but not so consistent. And also can he handle the
defensive slices...

It probably goes 5 sets.. to Nadal. He'll revert back to his Fed
beating game (like he did at Wimbledon), which is more spin and 90%
shots to the backhand.

This is hard courts, and the surface does make a difference, although I
agree this is the best I've ever seen Nadal play on it (especially his
serve).

The head-to-head is 6-11 to Nadal, to be sure, but they rarely meet on
hard courts (because usually Nadal doesn't get to the final). When they
have, Federer is up 4-2. Doesn't mean Nadal can't beat him on hard courts,
but it doesn't say Federer can't win either.

Head to head Rafa just seems to wedge into Roger's head and abuse
him... but... it has brought the fight out in Roger... I WONDER??? If
Nadal has actually armed Roger mentally for being able to win majors
from 27-31-ish... he actually said in one interview last year "I've

If they both make the final, it ought to be a pretty even match.
It is not Nadal's favorite or best surface, but otoh he's #1, peaked, and
has a match-up advantage when it comes to Federer.

Straight setting is not excluded of course, either way.

Not convinced Nadal will be in the final if he has to play his semi
against Tsonga.

If he does, I'll probably load up on Nadal to win.

Roger hasn't defeated Nadal in quite a while and you can forget about
surfaces. This is a matchup problem for Roger.

Had Murray survived, I think he would have taken Nadal out without too
much trouble. This one looked to be a repeat of last year until Djoko
shit the bed yesterday.

I really like Nadal if he makes the final vs. Federer.

Nadal has been like a bank for me for quite a while now even if I
don't really like him on hard courts. I love him against Federer.

Who's going to put that prediction on the line after that last match?

If Rafa has straight setters next 2 matches he'll thump Fed in straights
too.
