Mauresmo was down 2-5 and match points in the 3rd set in the previous round
against Julie Coin, who was only in the draw because Maria Kirilenko pulled
out.

Ana is done. Put a fork in her. No more slams for the one hit wonder.
She will never win another slam in her career.

Whatever. She has been sick or injured or something in every match
since FO. I think that is a complete mess.

What's with Ivanovic? forehand broke again?

But any way it goes, that's a stunning result (and probably fried a lot of
betting-books).

Good on Amelie!

The newspaper this morning described her as "a bundle of errors and mis-hits,
and she again had trouble with her ball toss and serve, while Mauresmo served
brilliantly and had too much variety..."

One of the reasons some of us love her to bits! :-)

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Mauresmo was somewhat inconsistent
even at her proverbial peak.

After I saw some footage of the Mauresmo/Dokic match (yesterday) I was
thinking I couldn't see any reason why Mauresmo coyuldn't mount a serious
comeback this year. She looks as fit and strong as she ever has, and she
plays what's now a unique game on the women's side. It would be good to
see her back at the top.

And now this. Of course, I want Ivanovic to be at the top, too. :)

I don't hate any of the women, now that Capriati and Pierce are gone . . . .

Goodamn I hated Pierce too. The last memory of her match is her getting
injured and screaming like a stuck pig. That's what happens when crazy
person gets hurt.

Coin ended up playing for more than 6 and a 1/2 hours in her 2 matches.

Great win for Mauresmo after the 3 hour 14 minutes marathon against Coin.

Points for stamina and crowd-pleasingness.

Dunno about for putting her opponents away.

How long did it take her to put Ivanovic away?

You'd've thought she'd've been shaken-- if not somewhat tired-- by that,
so she should take a lot of confidence away from this.

Didn't she fire her coach last year?

In what sense? She won two tough matches and then beat the current FO
champion and world #5 (who was, admittedly, sick). It's not likie she's
lost all the matches she's playted this year.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about Ivanovic.

> (who was, admittedly, sick).

I haven't seen that anywhere. Today's paper says she played a "high risk
strategy on depleted energy reserves" (why can't they just say "tired"?), and
implies that that was only because of the length of her previous match (by
saying later that Mauresmo's previous match was even longer).

I'm claiming complete innocence and blaming Wendy for my mistake. I think she
set a cunning trap for an unsuspecting poster by quoting the pronoun but not the
earlier noun, since talk of a split with a coach is more likely to be about the
loser than the winner. Isn't this the most reasonable explanation?

Yes. I read it as being a bit sad for both of them, but they agreed
something needed to change, and this was the the way to do it. Rather
mature on both parts IMO.

Look, they were one of the longest coaching teams in the sport. Mauresmo's
ranking had dropped to 24 and they were both saying she was having trouble
with motivation. Clearly *something* had to change.
