If Fed wins, grand slam glory, big boost in his quest to regain #1
ranking.
If Nadal makes it to the final and wins it, everybody will be talking
about CYGS and he would have changed the entire conversation right
under Fed's nose! He has done this many times already to Fed (all the
CYGS talk, French & Wimbledon combo, Olympics gold to name a few) and
if he does it here again, he may crush any hopes of Fed regaining the
#1 for the rest of the year!

It seems like every time Federer and Nadal are playing in Slams, they
are not just playing run of the mill slam finals, but historically
significant slam finals.

Absolutely the most compelling Australian Open final in memory,
assuming Nadal can get past Verdasco.

Nadal:
- Hardcourt slam winner means main asterisk is removed from his career
- Dominance over Fed confirmed - defeated in final on all 3 GS
Surfaces in one year period + No.1 ranking

Federer:
- Slam No.14 (say no more)
- Holds last 2 slams and same amount as Nadal, arguments of Nadal
dominance seem weak and contrived since he hasn't won since Wimbledon/
Olympics
- Federer owns (2 surfaces to 1) winning record in majors over his
major competitor (Grass superiority 2-1, Hardcourt superiority 1-0,
Clay inferiority 0-3)

Yes, these matches/finals are so tough and there is always so much at stake
legacy-wise, more than "just a slam".

Llast FO, like in any other, you know what was that all about.
Then Wimbledon, had Federer won it, it would be all different story for
2008.
Then he won USO, again, so much at stake (just for him, no Rafa).
Now this AO, you said it nicely.

And after that, no let-downs allowed, assuming they both make it to FO final
as well..yet another historic clash with so much at stake.

I suspect that Rafa is going to get a little bit of his own medicine
he doled out to Fed at last years FO this Sunday.

Fed is angry. And, an angry Fed is a deadly Fed.

Yes, unusual importance for an AO final. Even if it's only Federer in the
final. If Nadal makes it too, well, perhaps the most important AO final
ever?

With those two guys, and records they're chasing each of their FO/W finals
was big thing. They get bigger every year.
Now it's a potential third slam where they could meet, and if Nadal makes
it, they will be playing for a combined 19th slam title.

In retrospect, the heaviest slam final so far was USO 02, where 21st slam
title was at stake.
