Still ecstatic about Roddick making the final, with a chance of a
walkover win if Murray pulls out ...

There's no doubt that an upside of the current situation for Federer
is that the focus has shifted away from him towards players like
Murray and Nadal.

Murray will go into the AO with a lot of expectation - this may not
cause him any problems but on the other hand it is a different
situation for him.

Federer can, as you say, slip under the Nadal/Murray radar and maybe
take advantage of the lack of pressure on him - to an extent this
happened at the USO as his form coming in was poor.

To see if he can do it? :-)

How often do you see teams jump out to big early leads, only to relax,
get overconfident and eventually lose the game? Not saying this is the
case with Roger (getting overconfident), but if he wants to slide
under the Murray/Nadal media radar into his first slam, not trying TOO
hard in a tune-up but just enough to see what his odds are makes some
sense.

Because he lost today? Breaking news - this wasn't a slam so he didn't
lose a chance to win another one.

Why does Federer go to the bother of winning the first set each time
before deciding to ease off since it's a tune-up?

Mono? More like tune-up. If Murray beats him in a slam, we can discuss.

This was infinitely more important than Abu Dhabi, but still it was
just a tune-up. But clearly Murray has beaten Fed many times after
USO. But also clearly USO was the big match.

The marginals were small in this match. Watched it in the corner of my
eye at work. Had it recorded at home, but the recording ended at the
end of the 2nd set, in fact in a middle of a very long point with
Federer serving at 2-5, 15-30. I'd like to know who won that point.

Murray held serve more easily in the 1st set, but Federer was better
in the tie-break, should have won it easier but made a double fault.
Then Fed had 0-40 in the 2nd set, but Murray played really well to
hold. Then one sloppy game from Fed to lose serve, and then he played
like he didn't care rest of that set (until that point where my
recording ended anyway). Only saw something of the 3rd set at work,
looked like Murray's back was gone, but he still won the set 6-2.
Don't know what was going on there.

I think Murray hit a winner to have 2 breakpoints and took the first.

Basically Fed collapsed in both sets as soon as he was broken. I don't
think he believed he could break Murray, and he couldn't....

That's still a fair point. This could in fact work to Fed's advantage
if they meet in AO final as he has huge experience advantage in big
matches & Murray would be choking up a bit with expectations, having
beaten him 5/6.
