Yes, thanks, I know. It was poor editing on my part; I had started to
include a comment about the USO champs from beginning of open era to
advent of HC in '78 -- that even then Orantes and Vilas were the only
non-#1 players -- but I deleted that part figuring it would just
trigger an argument about how #1 was determined before the computer
rankings. But then I left in the sentence about Vilas without the
foundational material. It is one of the greatest ranking quirks that
he did not attain #1.

To augment Jason's observation -- his comment goes back to '78 -- the
only non-#1 USO men's singles champs in the entire open era come from
the three-year Har-Tru window of 75-77. The open era USO grass court
champs -- Ashe, Laver, Rosewall, Smith, Nastase, Newk, and Connors all
were top dog at one time or another, though not necessarily when they
held the USO title -- Ashe and Rosewall for example.

Rafter is the closest call here, I guess. Yet, however briefly, he
was #1.

It still boggles my mind that Vilas didn't get there in 77. It was a
different system.

No, you've got Kuznetsova, Sabatini at least that were never No. 1, at
least I don't think they were.

The USO trumps everything in terms of classiest champions.

Every single men's winner since it moved to hard court has been No. 1
at some point in his career.
