Subject: List of one slam wonders of open era (made one slam final and won it)
Andres Gimeno (FO)
Adriano Panatta (FO)
Yannick Noah (FO)
Andres Gomez (FO)
Thomas Muster (FO)
Richard Krajicek (Wimbledon) --- a real shame that Sampras lost to
this guy
Albert Costa (FO)
Gaston Gaudio (FO)

Sue Barker (FO)... I must say she got lucky Chris Evert didnt play
Chris O Neil (AO)... A farce, Evert/Navratilova did not play
Barbara Jordan (AO)... Another farce, Evert/Navratilova did not play
Iva Majoli (FO)
Anastasia Myskina (FO)

What the fuck is up with French Open? So many one slam wonders who
never made a final again. If you ignore the AO ones (really the
competition was super poor those years), then it is FO all the way,
except the embarrassing defeat of Pete Sampras against Krajicek in
Wimbledon.

LOL so you would pick Sampras against Borg on clay? You are one dumb
hombre. But then we already knew that didnt we Skriptis?

Your qestion is rather dumb since it includes different generations.
Then we have a problem, ie, would they play with wood, or modern racquets
etc.
That's why it's even hard to say that Nadal is the best claycourter ever.

Sure, Borg is the greatest, but Nadal might become even greater. It's still
difficult to say he's better than Borg was on clay.

One match, Sampras vs everyone, even clay?
Yes.

After all he beat 7 different FO champs.

How many of them Federer beat?

He even lost IO final to Mantilla...way before Nadal came.

One match?
Sampras on every surface vs everyone. (excluding Nadal on clay).

Nadal on clay vs everyone.

*skriptis has a fine analytical brain & is an independent thinker - does
not follow the herd. I recall he was one of the few analysts who
correctly predicted Rafa to prevail over Federer in AO final when most
were tipping Murray. Certainly would be a high quality ng if we had
more of his ilk & less of the rambling baboons ala Haze/wkhdr types

Stich would have won the FO, if not for Kafelnikov who played out of
his mind in the final. Stich would have fed Sampras at least a couple

No, he was three times FO SF (and 89 he should even win the FO)
because he was a great talent, a fantastic player with a huge will. He
had only 2 huge enemies that prevented him from having those numbers
frin Sampras:
His non-tennis life (sex, drugs & rock'n'roll) and the strong era he
played.

Not on talent - Sampras rated him very highly.

Stich's mental approach was poor - you could see him on court getting
frustrated when things went wrong.

Also as Mikko said his physique was prone to injuries throughout his
career..

On clay, Stich was stronger and more successful than Becker. Becker
malfunctioned on clay in a similar way like Sampras.

Both have been 1-slam wonder at this moment. Furthermore Stich
slogged Sampras on several other occasions. On clay, e.g., I wouldn't
have bet a penny on Sampras.

You're joking? Sampras woulda beaten Stich in '96 FO final had he eaten
his pizza & got past Kafelnikov in semis.

If Sampras had more in the tank vs Kafelnikov and somehow made the FO final
it would be lights for Stich in the final.

Same way he dealed with triple FO semifinalst Becker, in their IO final.

Don't forget the fact that Krajicek was way too lucky that Boris
Becker got injured that year. His odds against the 96' Becker would
have been almost zero.

Yep that was amazing for a clay courter to beat a good serve volleyer
like Rafter at Wimbledon.

I agree. It is shocking that he never won a slam again. I though he
was the best candidate to take over Sampras at the end of 1993. He
even beat him in the YEC final that year and was #2 I believe.

Pete Sampras was incredibly lucky that Edberg, Stich and Agassi faded
after 1995. He had fun time with assclown from 1996-1998 and he still
didnt really absolutely dominate the tour!

According to the ATP site, that win over Rafter was in the 2nd round.

Bruguera lost 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 to Chang at 1994 Wimby Round of 16.

Kuerten's poor results at AO reason was well known throughout his
career. Rio de Janeiro carneval (jan-feb) which he loved.

So basically you're saying is that Guga was a clown for not committing 100%

FO is a specialty surface. The other slams are HC and grass and they
bear some resemblance to each other. Clay is just too different. If
you specialize for it you won't do good anywhere else. At least, that
has been the rule since Borg and until Nadal.

No, since USO in a way is too much predictable. Only current-former-future
#1 have won there.
Perfection isn't perfect.

I think they were both hurt a lot by the faster conditions at
Wimbledon in the 90s. I'm not sure though why

Guga won the YEC once beating Sampras. So he wasnt that bad. Bruguera
gave a tough fight to Sampras at Wimbledon playing serve volley. You
are under-estimating both.

So then AO should have many more one-Slam wonders?

It's not really surprising that the French would have the majority of
one-Slam wonders. Until recently, there was
a fairly big divide between the players successful on clay and the
players successful at the other Slams.

Look at Guga. He's not a one-Slam wonder, but he never made a Slam
semifinal off of clay. And at the supposedly other "slow-court" Slam
he didn't make one round of 16. Bruguera never made the quarters of of
a non-clay Slam.

Look at Guga. He's not a one-Slam wonder, but he never made a Slam
semifinal off of clay. And at the supposedly other "slow-court" Slam
he didn't make one round of 16. Bruguera never made the quarters of of
a non-clay Slam.

You might like to check your facts again on Bruguera because Bruguera did
make
the QF at Wimbledon in 94 and he beat Rafter in R16 in Wimbledon.
