Subject: Nadal tennis' first freak of nature
We've seen many great players on tennis courts but I can honestly say Nadal
is the only one who does things I've never seen before and I doubt I'll see
again.

Doesn't the game prohibit the use of inhalants on or off court?

You don't think it takes a special talent to beat Fed in 3 different
slam finals in the space of 7 months?

I thought you had a high opinion of Fed....?

if the only sport you watch is tennis, then this is an understandable
sentiment, but i would say quite the opposite to your conclusion. what
players like nadal and monfils indicate is that better athletes are
playing tennis at present.

some of the people on this newsgroup impress me as being very "artistry"
oriented, in that they seem to evaluate players based on how good the
players tennis strokes look. this view evaluates tennis like you would
evaluate olympic figure skating - as though players win on style points.

That is the beauty of tennis. It is a perfect mix of aesthetics and
athletics. I have two favorite sports - tennis and football (soccer).
Those are similar in this respect, I think. I am sure "One" didn't only
refer to Nadal's athletic capabilities on court.

If you only see sports as purely physical I recommend boxing or
weightlifting.

PS.

there is no doubt that there is a set of skills that are specific to
tennis that must be mastered. but you can't merely rely upon the
artistry of a player's strokes as proof of mastery of requisite skills.
if anything, true "artistry" should be about improvisation and not the
expectation that a player's game will fit into some preconceived mold
as many of the "art" tennis fans seem to expect.

but on any account, "art" tennis presumes that you can evaluate play on
style points with the expectation that the match results will follow the
decision on style points. in my opinion, what really counts is the
match results and i put comparatively less significance on the style
points.

Of course match result is the thing to look after in the end. But we
have also different opinions about what is aesthetic beauty and what is
not. I am allowed to say that I really hope that Gasquet can improve his
physical abilities, serve etc. to be more of a complete player. In that
sense I am a fan of Gasquet's style, but he also misses a lot in his
game. I don't have the same opinion about Monaco for example. That
doesn't mean that I see Gasquet as one of the greats, at least not yet.
But I am still allowed to be a fan of parts of his game.

Just like in football I want it to be an entertaining game - not only
result wise. Aesthetics a part of that entertainment IMO.

PS.
