16 DECEMBER 2008-- World No 11 Nadia Petrova of Russia has been forced to
withdraw from the 2009 ASB Classic featuring the Kia Motors Singles and
Doubles.

The 26-year-old is currently in hospital with viral meningitis and will
not be travelling to Auckland with other big events down under also in
doubt . . . .

No wimpy mono or CMV for _her_ . . . .

Jesus. Hope she comes out of it OK.

Take a deep breath, take a walk, cool off, plot a bit, and serve again.

Well, this is the only place I found this information.

It says "NP left the hospital and will be followed by a doctorafter her
meningitis found last week. The russian player plans to play the
Medibank International in Sydney from january the 11th to 18h"

(sorry from crappy translation)

Dated December 22, and attributed to her agent . . . .

It's safe to say that my mind, at least, is boggling.

Players from this era are truly superior to those of past.
They're so resiliant...recovering very quickly from mono, meningitis...

I think either there was a fair deal of misunderstanding involved, or
you were being (very clumsily) trolled. Really not sure which.

Isn't "Pief" normally something of a prick? I have a vague remembrance of
having killfiled h/h/it, although I don't see it in my present killfile . . . .

Maybe I was just thinking about it . . . .

Thanks. I hope your friend makes it through with minimal damage. I'm
afraid loss of motor control is one of the more *benign* effects, if
you can imagine that. My mother lost most higher brain function: can't
feed herself, may or may not understand speech, but has none herself,
needs around-the-clock nursing care.

She's got just a hair more functionality left than Whisper.

Petrova will be fine. viral meningitis is not life threatening in most
cases. what would
be bad is full blown meningitis alone. then she would be in serious
trouble. viral meningitis is very curable with little after side
effects.

That's... dumb.

Meningitis is an infection of the brain. It can be viral or bacterial,
the viral form being more serious and less treatable. Neither form is
"treatable in most cases". It runs its course, without much recourse,
and the damage falls within a wide range - which medical science can
do very little to affect.

No. He is just pointing out that even being old and after having viral
meningitis she is more coherent than Whisper.

Then again, I have seen trees more coherent than Whisper. I mean at
least they blow in the wind. Whisper only blows Sampras.

I'm not sure whether age and fitness make a difference: part of what
makes meningitis so damaging is that you essentially have no immune
system working behind the blood-brain barrier. I do know that when the
doctors gave us my mother's prognosis, "She'll be okay" was not one of
the choices.

It's been a while. I know it hurts, but it's a sort of cerebral notion
of pain, at this point.

I hope you're right about Petrova. She's always struck me as a likable
young woman.

There are two kinds of meningitis - bacterial and viral. Viral is the
harder to treat (for obvious reasons - antibiotics don't work on viruses).
Still, according to the CDC Web site most people do make full recoveries
even from the viral kind, and Petrova's being young and healthy ought to
help; I take your point about the blood-brain barrier, but you're still
likely to have greater recovery powers when you're younger and a more
active immune system certainly can't hurt.

Sorry about your mother.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have a friend who is sick now with what
appears to be meningitis. The doctors say he may be paralyzed if he
lives. He's a tree trimmer by trade so survival, as you say, may not
be the luckier outcome.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have a friend who is sick now with what
appears to be meningitis. The doctors say he may be paralyzed if he
lives. He's a tree trimmer by trade so survival, as you say, may not
be the luckier outcome.

I had a Doctor (several years after the event) tell me that the illness that
had caused me to have a headache, literally every waking moment for months,
was viral meningitis. I'm back to normal, by my standards anyway. For
example, my punctuation was always dreadful.

You may lower your standards further. Or do you still fart as loudly as
proudly ?

Nadia Petrova may not be a "babe" but she gained a minimum of respect
by her tennis skills and her behaviour on and off the court.
Please, try to be decent even if not basically educated.

What are you talking about:? Nothing I said was offensive in the slightest.

I was wondering that myself. Even went back and checked. Santa must've
been naughty with someone this year.

Thanks.

I really did wonder if I'd somehow accidentally hit upon a codeword of
great offense, but it seemed unlikely.
My post wasn't exactly fascinating, maybe that provoked them.

My mother had viral meningitis. They told us it was about 50/50
whether she lived or died.

I'm not sure survival turned out to be the luckier outcome.

Well, Nadia's young and healthy, so hopefully there will be only minimal
what the doctors so blandly call "sequelae" . . . .

Boy, when you're Number 11, nobody gives a shit, apparently: I could find
little more than the bare report on Russian sites-- she apparently got
sick and is or was hospitalized in Argentina, where she'd gone to train--
nothing on the Argentinan sites I checked, nothing on ESPN.com, nothing on
the WTA website, and her own website's latest news is about two months old . . . .

(And my eyes feel quite strained from fishing through Cyrillic and Spanish.)

Get better, Nadia, whereEVER you are . . . .
