In one of the Tesla biographies -- I'm thinking it was the O'Neil bio,
the best one I've read, but am not sure -- there's a story about one
time Mark Twain visited Tesla's lab. Twain was standing on a platform
of some kind, used in Tesla's experiments on resonant frequencies.
Because Twain found the sensation pleasing, he would not get off the
platform when Tesla warned him not to remain too long. By the time
Twain fled the room, it was too late, the ultra-low frequency
vibrations had caused a laxative effect.

Tesla is a colossus, but I agree the impact of Newton is greater,
notwithstanding the impact Tesla had on a certain great man of letters.

Moi? When do I go around "dissing" old players?

Surely you are not joking Mr [not] Fenman? I don't claim RF as the
ultimate, Einstein's thought experiments are the absolute in terms of
creative genius! There are many geniuses in all fields, Bohr,
Schrodinger; Poincare, D'es Cartes, Galileo, Da Vinci, Mozart,
Picasso, why should physics be the greatest filed to conquer?

I did not say Newton was the greatest mathematician of all time
(though some might argue that point). I said that for a while he was
the greatest mathematician on earth, which I do not think can be
reasonably disputed. Euler and Gauss came later. Leibniz was a
contemporary who eventually came up with a superior notation for
calculus, but Newton got to calculus first. In fact, before their feud
erupted into bitterness, Leibniz himself advanced the idea that Newton
was the greatest mathematician alive. But there's no need to rehash
all that history here.

Your "jack of all trades" (therefore master of none?) comment is
silly. Newton was no dilettante polymath; he was an absolutely
pathbreaking genius in many of the areas in which he worked.

LOL. Few people are more devoted to the legend of Feynman than his
biographer, James Gleick. He titled the biography simply "Genius," so
obviously his estimation of Feynman's abilities is considerable. (In
fact, I've read the book, so I can tell you for sure that Gleick does
think extremely highly of Feynman.) Here's what Gleick has said about
Newton: "discovered more of the essential core of human knowledge than
anyone before or after."

That's what ultimately counts -- not whether a 20th century
physicist's physics are more advanced than those of a 17th century
physicist.

Then you really shouldn't be dissing the earliest tennis players - they
did it 1st even though later players were more advanced.

Agree Newton discovered calculus and was a great mathematician not the
best (gauss Euler liebnitz and many other) more like a
jackofalltrades! More like a Cochet. Einstein is like Laver physics
passes him by. The safecracker was a damn good bongo player. He had
figured out all of Newton's calculus at 13! Far better physicist and
math wiz. Obviously u r not caltech alum? Sorry.

I'd say Tesla was a great engineer and an "interesting" scientist. He
has become a cult favorite due to a combination of Eastern European
boosterism and crank/paranoiac beliefs in secret discoveries (this was
the view of Tesla that appeared in the movie "The Prestige," which
posited that Tesla had invented teleportation). You have to filter out
those biases to get a clear picture of his standing. I don't think
that anyone with a serious view of the history of science would
consider Tesla the greatest physicist ever, let alone the greatest
scientist ever.

The Newton vs. Einstein case is more complicated, but if you polled
either physicists or scientists in general on this question, I am
pretty confident that Newton would come out ahead. I'm not sure what
you mean by describing Einstein as "technically the best," but
remember that mathematical approximations of nature invariably have
had a limited lifespan. Newton's approximation lasted for about two
and a half centuries before it was displaced by Einstein's (and even
now Newton's equations retain their utility and accuracy in most
circumstances). Einstein's approximation (the General Theory) is now
closing in on its first century of primacy. I doubt that it will be
prevail much beyond that before being displaced by a GUT of some kind.
But of course that won't mean Einstein was "wrong" -- just incomplete,
in the same way that Newton was incomplete before Einstein.

Footnote to the "technically the best" point: Newton invented his own
brand new mathematics to work out his theory of gravity. Einstein
needed help from outside mathematicians with that end of it. :) For a
while Newton was simultaneously the greatest mathematician and the
greatest physicist on earth. I don't believe anyone since Newton has
been able to make that claim, and few in history ever have
(Archimedes, probably).

A great scientist makes fundamental discoveries in a core scientific
discipline. A GOAT-level scientist not only creates or remakes a core
discipline in a lasting way, he reshapes the worldview of humanity
beyond the purely scientific realm. By that criterion, I would have to
rank Newton 1, Darwin 2, and Einstein 3.

"It"? Look, it's widely known that Newton practiced alchemy. So what?
That doesn't discredit his scientific achievements. He was also a
fervent -- though decidedly heterodox -- Christian. Many famous
scientists have had nutty superstitions and/or religious beliefs.
Science depends on *overcoming* basic human irrationality, not
pretending it doesn't exist.

You have a 20th century fixation. Physics existed before quantum
physics. Some might even say that Archimedes was the greatest
scientist ever. But just ask anyone on your list if he personally
believes he is/was a greater scientist than Newton. You'll get lotsa
laughs. :)

No.

By the way, the fact that you have posted two separate replies to the
same post of mine indicates that you are getting far too excited. :)
There's nothing controversial about Newton's scientific greatness.
It's a fundamental fact of the history of science. Just learn to live
with it. Otherwise the ghost of Feynman will come and torment you with
his bongo playing.

My ass. Newton couldn't spell quantum!! Let alone understand the
mechanics. He was an analchemist the senile old man.

Actually, I would say he is and is not in the discussion. :)

Anyway, I'd say maybe in the top 10 of great quantum physicists, top
25 of great physicists, and top 50 of great scientists. Just guesses,
of course. The more general the category, the harder it is to hold
your place.

What about his cat?

I actually started reading this thread becuase I thought the title concerned
"real tennis." What a disappointment. 8;)

Let's leave that out of the discussion, shall we? :)

True, but completely irrelevant.

LOL -- do you mean "alchemist"? I'm not sure I want to know what your
version investigates. :)

What about them? The last three wouldn't have existed if not for
Newton, and their discoveries/breakthroughs were not as revolutionary
as his. Galileo had great insights, but did not systematize them to
the extent that Newton did.

Newton is not only the greatest physicist ever, he is the greatest
*scientist* ever. Runners-up are Einstein and Darwin.

What about
Galileo Galilei
James Clerk Maxwell
Niels Bohr
Werner Heisenberg

Can the physicist GOAT discussion begin?

Tesla = McEnroe (Natural talent goat)

Einstein = Sampras (technically the best)

Newton = Tilden (1st true tennis superstar & considered goat until about
1960's)

Like I tell Hazlewood... Nadal is such a great and classy guy.
Why can't you be more like him?

Talk up Nadal, its easy to do because he is so very talented and
successful. But why the constant need to talk bad about his rivals?

Why?

p.s the fast order cooks are actually the shit ones --- IE McDonalds,
so that phraseology is far from water-tight.

It's actually the "slow-order" cooks who are the real chefs.

Mr. Federer is the holder of 13 slams and #2 in the world.

Rephrasing Mr. Roddick, how would you like to be the second best (put
your occupation here) in the world?

Not much, *if* I was in with a strong showing of becoming the greatest
(put your occupation here) that ever lived.

It's all about context.

The no.2 physicist in 2009 is not the same as being Einstein. There are
no.1 & 2's every yr, but only 1 goat.

Throw Raja and TT one banana and watch them fight over it :)

I would ad Whisper to the list also because he is interested in
building up one player and running down all the others who may or may
not be better than his favorite. The only true tennis fans are those
who respect and acknowledge Federer, Nadal, and the other players even
if they have a favorite of their own.

Pretty much agree. No real tennis analysis from those. Just fanbois/girls.

Apparently being an analyst is currently seen as trying to guess what
Federer thinks and why he cried...but also giving him advice what he
should do to beat Nadal, he will be very grateful for this tier1
analysis when he reads rst.
This is very serious stuff to many here.

Or maybe I mixed tier1 analyst with a fanboi there.

All you talk about is Nadal and how he makes Fed cry. You and WAY2GOOD
are not tennis fans at all.
