Can he break all time record?

Sampras/Borg = 8

Fed is at 6. Had he not won USO last yr his streak would be over at 5.

Sampras also holds the record of winning at least 1 slam in 10 different
years.

It's not about 2008 alone, it's about many years of dominance. This is
what I thought they were trying to figure out.

Why do you have to wait 10 years to decide whether Nadal or Federer
dominated in 2008? Can't you work it out right now?

Actually, some would claim that Jansher Khan is greater than Jahangir,
despite Jahangir's 555 streak - but that's a whole other debate ...

Using whisper's logic, nadal is a goat level player with just 1 wim
and 0 uso. Not going to cut it when compared to fed (5 wim, 5 uso) or
borg (5 wim, 6 fo) or sampras (7 wim, 5 uso).

And i am pretty sure nadal is not going to come anywhere near to fed's
or sampras' wim/uso record.

No, but he didn't "dominate" which is what is being discussed here.
Surely you don't argue that with Nadal winning FO, Wim and the
Olympics?

I guess 2008 was bad for Federer with one SF, two finals and one slam.

Because its small enough to cover peak performance, and large enough
not to be a one-off fluke (like say Wilander - imagine someone saying
that he dominated more than Sampras). Most of the time during a career
champions don't dominate apart from the peak period. Sampras only
"dominated" between 1993-1997 (though 96 is iffy with one slam) and
Fed dominated between 2004-2007...

I am not sure I follow - Fed's domination between 2004-2007 (4 years)
was definitely more thorough than anything Sampras achieved in his
career. Fed's worst year in that period equalled Sampras' best, and
his 2nd worst year completely overshadowed Sampras' best, even if use
7543 which u so religiously subscribe to...

But why is 4-year period *the period* for you?
why not 6, 12, 1, whole career?

I don't think anyone is calling Rafa GOAT at this point. But he is a
GOAT level player in the making, and that's hard to dispute with his
numbers. What Rafa has done as of now is just kick Fed out of the GOAT

Yes, that was a stupid statement. So I reminded him that Sampras'
streak would have been over at 3 if he lost the USO in 1996 (and he
was closer to losing than Fed)...

But you are assuming that Fed won't win another slam. I don't think
thats likely - he just needs to hang around and have someone take out
Rafa and he will be adding to the slam count...

In that case, ok, I'll give him the honour of being the most dominant.

But it makes no sense to me to ignore 1-year period (Laver) or overall
numbers (Sampras) and proclaim someone who's dominanted for 3-4-5 years as
the game's greatest dominator.

I agree, ultimately such a record as winning slams over consecutive
years is irrelevant, the only thing it will boil down to is who has
the most. The thing is with people calling rafa the new GOAT already
is because of the sheer speed he has accumulated his first 6 slams
(before the age of 23,) the fact that he has beaten someone who many
consider to be GOAT in 5 slam finals in the process and because he is
amazingly STILL improving.

of course lets not forget that BOTH Rafa + Fed could equal or beat the
8 even though it's not looking brilliant for fed. He still has great
chances at Wimby/Uso

no i think the record is 8 years
Rafa is already on 5
it would require fo for the next 3 years after this one

Yes, he could equal Sampras/Borg at age 25 & get to 9 straight yrs by
age 26.

No need to qualify, unless you're going to do it for every field of
human endeavor not just tennis.

Usually no need as to most people it is implied. But of course it is
necessary when we're dealing with someone who has SEIBS!

yeah, what a bizarre thing to add "so far", bit like saying that guy who won
555 consecutive squash matches is only the best player in history "so far".

I'm glad someone else agrees & sees through this nonsense. My

Ok, so you'd agree Borg isn't the goat at winning Wim/FO in same year -
he's only goat 'so far'...?

That's fine with me if that happens, I have no emotional ties with Fed
or Nadal. Just trying to keep some sense in rst. Looks like the GOAT
talk with Rafa starts earlier than with Fed. Rafa is currently at 6
slams, folks. To use Whisper terms, not even halfway to Fed or
Sampras.

I especially liked Whisper's point in the last post "Had he not won
USO last yr his streak would be over at 5." So he needs to win 3 slams
a year, otherwise it should be mentioned that the streak was almost
broken. But Rafa won just 1 slam in the first three years of his
streak.

that means he needs another 6 more to beat the record so since he won
the ao this year he can lose the french and then has to win another 5
FO in a row to beat the record. you think he has a "fantastic" chance
of doing that ?

i don't.

ok ok i know he "may" win another slam a year he loses the FO but you
know as well as I do that once he loses an FO he's roasted and done
with so we might as well be talking about him winning 6 FO's in a row
after this year which may as well be 11 FO's in a row !

NOT gonna happen.

Who held this record before Sampras? Isn't that the measure of how

Nobody won 10 in 3 years. Federer won 8 in 3 years(2004-2006) or
(2005-2007). Let's see Nadal pull that one off.

Oh and yeah yeah that is MORE than DOUBLE what Rafa has won in
any 4 years and 40% more than Pete ever won in 4 years of his
prime !

When it comes to DOMINATION nobody EVER dominated like Roger.

Nobody even comes close !!!

So there !

Sampras tops him when we look at 13-year period.
14 in 13, much more than 13 in 13.

Doesn't reconcile with these facts;

- Lost 5 slam finals (& counting) to same guy
- Suffered biggest slam hiding in final by no.1 seed of all times - 2008
FO final

He's dominant at besting clowns I'll give you that.

No one suggests any of those clowns is better than Sampras. How many
think Rafa is better than Fed?

Actually I made a mistake:

Oh and yeah yeah that is MORE than DOUBLE what Rafa has won in
any 4 years and almost 60% more than Pete ever won in 4 years of his
prime !

8 in 3 or 11 in 4, either way Roger's awesome. Nadal to beat the 8 in 3 mark
for 2008-2010, would have to win 6 out of the next 7 slams. If he can pull
that off, he's GOAT because of course it would include a CYGS this year or
next.

Thought you didn't care about streaks that involved losses? And btw,
if Sampras didn't win USO 1996 (Corretja should have beaten him IMO),
his streak would have been over at 3...

We'll know if he breaks the record earliest in 2013. Before then, just STFU.
