Subject: Roger Federer on radar "is Cahill going to work with Federer?"
|
DARREN Cahill's decision to stand down as Davis Cup coach has triggered speculation former world No. 1 Roger Federer is poised to hire the South Australian. Cahill, 43, is based in Las Vegas, where he retains a close working association with former charge Andre Agassi. Cahill and Gil Reyes, Agassi's conditioner, are helping Spain's Fernando Verdasco prepare for US hardcourt and European claycourt tournaments. Cahill cited personal and business commitments as the reasons behind his decision to stand down as Australia's Davis Cup coach. But his sudden availability yesterday revived one of the most persistent conspiracy theories in tennis: that Federer will recruit Cahill. Swiss world No. 2 Federer has previously worked with two Australian coaches - Peter Carter and Tony Roche. South Australian Carter was instrumental in Federer's development and was set to become Switzerland's Davis Cup captain before he died in a car accident in 2002. And Sydney's Roche guided Federer to six of his 13 grand slam singles titles between 2005 and 2007 before he was dumped by the Swiss master. Revered internationally, Cahill has achieved rare highs as a coach after an excellent career as an injury-ravaged player. Under his tutelage, Lleyton Hewitt became the youngest player to land the season-ending world No. 1 ranking. Agassi is the oldest player to regain the No. 1 ranking - and did so when coached by Cahill. Cahill yesterday could not be reached for comment. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25079802-3162,00.html

Roger doesn't take criticism well, like almost every other tennis great... nothing new there... I think Cahill's coaching is a bit too harsh for Federer, from what I hear... P
