in the world in their respective careers.... Has this ever happened?

If Dementieva or Serena Williams wins the final, that player will be #1,
not Safina.

No, actually it was a very good match. She just beat Dokic, who seems back
near her best again.

I'm not sure a purist would call it "very good", although it was very
dramatic, if not outright traumatic . . . .
