Subject: Santoro vs Nadal - Should I be worried?
Nadal plays Santoro for the very first time.

Santoro is a man of many surprises. Will his game mess up Nadal
completely, can he setup an upset? ...As happened when Djokovic played
Santoro for the first time in 2007:

http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxme24QPWSU

When they played first time against Santoro:

Santoro - Sampras: 6-2, 4-6, 7-5
Santoro - Kuerten: 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1
Santoro - Federer: 6-3, 7-6(3)
Santoro - Djokovic: 6-3, 6-2

Well, I think Santoro's playing style shouldn't work at all against
Nadal...But who knows...

How come Santoro's huge serve and massive flat forehand didn't work
against Nadal?

Santoro met Sampras at an airport and was playing half-arsed at this
tune-up?

Especially against Nadal who is massively endowed in that department and
has been digging himself a new one for years! ;-)

He has already played him at an exhibition. well, that's not a real match, but you can not change completely your game style for a match, and the spectators came to see Santoro, not someone faking.

I can't remember exactly. I think that the score looked like it was decided beforehand.

Hey, Santoro did win Doha once, granted it was a while back...

I remember playing some money tournaments in France back in 1993. I
beat some guy
name Fabrice and I jokingly asked him if his last name was Santoro. He
rightly replied that if his name
was Santoro I wouldn't be walking away with the balls (or in this case
buying a drink for my defeated opponent).

I don't know what Santoro was ranked back then but I do know that
serious tennis fans knew who he was 16 years ago, so he sure has been
around a helluva long time.

on the atp site it says he turned pro in 1989, Nadal was just three then!!
I wonder if there's anybody still on tour that was playing before he was
born, Agassi used to be.

Wow - that was certainly an amazing upset given Djokovic's great form
at the end of last year. Even watching those highlights it's hard to
believe Djokovic lost given the amount of effort he was putting in ...

Santoro was a teenager when Nadal was born! That is how much older
than Rafa he is. If Nadal loses to grandpa Santoro I will laugh!
Santoro is getting closer and closer to 40, FFS!

Santoro is 36, and he said last year he was going to retire, but then
started having second thoughts. Remember mono-Fed against Santoro at
AO? No problems whatsoever for Rafa.

Rafa will make sure to play some matches before AO starts. He'll
probably be able to afford to take it easy and experiment a little.
IMO it would be the smart thing to do; allowing Santoro a few games a
set, then tightening up his game when Santoro is getting into it.

Actually, Nadal should be ashamed if he can't bake at least one set:
A) Santoro has stated before that the type of player that gives him the most
trouble is the one that is capable of consistently returning everything that
he can throw at them. Remind you of someone?
B) Santoro is wayyyyy past it.

Pretty much so. Nadal played better than ever though. Probably would've
been bakery with his normal level too.

Santoro's short slices have no life against Nadal.

I thought Santoro was supposed to retire at the end of last year ? Bit
surprised he's still playing.

Yeah, he was, but it's great that he didn't - he's a gas to watch.

That said, I don't imagine Nadal will have much trouble with him.
