Makes one wonder if Nadal had a shot at Shakira too. She did act like a
Nadal fan there.

(P.S. Thanks for the title Iceberg:o)

Most pros can do that shot, though not always pull it off. It's a
trick shot for the fans, and it's not actually that difficult - there
are some average club players I know who can do it.

As I said, Blake did it the day before, but no-one made a big deal
about it because Murray was up to the net and duffed the easy volley.
If Davydenko had ventured forward and finished off the point at the
net, then it wouldn't have been noticed much.

It was a brilliant shot because of the limited space and the way in which he
combined it with a stunning backhand winner.

Denko is a tennis moron & has no idea when or why to approach the net -
idiot savant.

Yes, that's what crossed my mind too. Any other decent player would
have come forward at that point, but not Davydenko. He probably has
very little confidence in his net skills.

If it makes you feel any better, I've seen Roddick make the same mistake -
eventually having to eat a winner from *Hewitt*!

Yeah - I've seen the tweener shot a lot, and it's always fun and a
crowd-pleaser, but it's not jaw-dropping. For a while they used to call it
the Sabatweenie, because she did it fairly often. It didn't always win her
the point, but she said that doing it gave her such confidence that it was
worth it.

Nadal played a better shot in the same match - passing shot from well
out of position

TT, that was shot of the year, Sakari is being stupid, it wasn't some
ordinary shot pros do all the time, I remembering being amazed that he won
the point.

Given it's just a few days after January I think that title is pretty
irrelevant in any case, don't you?

Blake did one the day before against Murray - I'm afraid 'tweeners are
old hat.

Davydenko should have been into the net to knock off an easy volley
after the lob, but he stupidly stood at the baseline giving Nadal a
chance to win the point.

Um, what is the shot of the year? If you are talking about the shot
Rafa hits running back, that's EXACTLY like a 50-year old sports
journalist hit in a doubles match in December, when I was in the other
side of the net (and actually returned that shot, and the point lasted
for a long time after that, and we won it). I told him I have only
seen that on TV before, but in pro tennis that is routine.

No, that's not routine.

Yes, it is. Honestly, I wasn't even certain if you were talking about
that shot, but there wasn't really other candidates. I don't
understand why you make a big deal of that shot.

Yes it is routine. Yannick Noah pulled off better versions 25 yrs ago.

I guess it doesn't show in that clip but Nadal had very little space to
maneuver there...smashing into the wall straight after that shot. And he
hit it deep, hard and accurate. It's also the combination of shots,
first deep lift near the net, then squash Nadal smashing into the wall
and a very quick recovery and flashy way to finish the point.

I can't see how anyone could've played better in that situation. Except
some 50y journo of course...
You think it wasn't shot of the year...so far...?
