Serena is just HUGE... with a LOT of junk in the trunk...and she still
dominates almost the entire tour... amazing, frightening...

It's only best of three sets for the chicks and she takes these extended
sabbaticals constantly. She couldn't deal with the rigors of the full year
tour, but also how much energy you need depends on how you play, and she's
often whacking all out so tends to have pretty short points, and has the big
serve to help out too.

Two sets can go by pretty damn quick and then she gets a one day break.
Hardly all that rigorous. Even then though her knees will periodically blow
out.

It's not politically correct to say, but honestly, you don't need to be that
fit in my opinion to play tennis, especially the quick-point variety, and
especially the women's best of three version. Take Sampras' s/v version of
the game. You don't need to be very fit for that. Athletic a bit, but not
super-fit.

If you rally from the baseline all day and play someone who does the same,
obviously the matches could take 25 hours. But that would be because both
players are morons or utterly useless at sports.

The game used to have "infinite sets" as I call them, where theoretically a
set could actually take forever if both people hold their serve every game.
Like circa 1970.

That required some fitness. 5 sets as they play in slams today requires
some fitness, but not anywhere near as much as 5 sets used to be. Best of 3
with shortened sets - you can have a 30 min match!!
