Fed also bailed himself out with his serve at the 2006 AO quarters
against Denko and then went on
to win the tournament.

That's dumb in a number of ways; He wasn't lucky it was Berdych since
it was Berdych who actually took the first two sets, not someone like
Haas. Also, he actually beat Haas at the AO '06 in 5 when Haas was
much closer to his peak. And finally, it wasn't a choke from Berdych,
but great will and effort by Federer. Nobody plays like that for three
straight sets, without a letdown or even a slight drop in level.

Come off it. Did you see the sitter overheads he fluffed? My mum
woulda made them easy. He was scared shitless of beating the Fed.

If Fed played the same was he definitely woulda lost to Haas as well as
Safin. Lucky he realised he didn't need to get up to his top form for
Berdych, but I bet he was worried there for a little while until the 4th
set.

Sampras losing to Galo Blanco at the FO. That was nothing to write
home about was it ? At least Fed won in the end.

most of the winners were ace or service winners, and the low UE was
because he was just rolling the ball in (which to be honest he was
doing right from the start). At the US Open final, Fed was striking
the ball with power and accuracy. Not even close...

Berdych didn't allow him to play well as he was killing balls and
cleaning lines. There wasn't much Federer could do but serve higher
percentages, cut down unforced errors, hit more winners and then wait
for the moment Berdych comes down from a surreal level and edge him
out.

His groundies did not come back for good even in the 5th set. For
every one good shot, he hit 10 bad/average shots. Somehow he was not
able to get any zip on the shots. And he is missing his signature
shots such as the down the line fh after serve out wide.

True, but he did play very well v Safin. No reason why he can't get up
to that form in his next couple matches.

This was a big let off & he's lucky it was Berdych on the other side &
not someone like Haas.

Yes, & it's his good fortune it was Berdych on the other side. The only
way Fed coulda lost that match is if he hit enough errors.

He played very bad in the first two sets but Berdych was playing great
tennis forcing the worst play from Federer.
I'm not sure why Federer was not pulling the plug early in the rallies, my
only guess is to get his opponent tired and self-destruct but what if he
didn't win the 3rd set.
