Simplified GOAT /PED debate --

1. If Fed and Rafa are both clean, then GOAT-hood is up for grabs,
with the Pistol and the Rocket both watching and waiting.

2. If Rafa is dirty and Fed is clean, then Fed is GOAT.

3. If Fed is dirty and Rafa is clean, then GOAT-hood is unresolved
between Sampras and Laver, but is subject to reevaluation of Nadal
when he's at the end of his career.

4. If Fed and Rafa are both dirty, then there are no prospects
whatever for resolving the GOAT debate. Eons will pass, the Nile will
flood and recede, civilizations will rise and fall, the google
archives will collapse under a googleplex of posts, and yet the debate
will continue, echoing throughout the corridors of time.

Is anyone here seriously arguing that Fed might be dirty except for Whisper
and (probably) his cronies?

My point is it's just as likely as Rafa juicing.

But why is Rafa suspicios and Federer is not?

After all, we've seen Rafa tired few times, and we've seen Fed does like to
brag how "he isn't affraid of the fifth set".

you keep forgetting Lendl was 9 year older to Becker. When Lendl lost
his 1989 USO he was already 29 and when he lost his 91 AO to Becker he
was 31.

The only valid slam final he lost to Becker was 86 Final which was
high quality match and should have gone at least 4 sets had Lendl not
choked in the 3rd set.
And that was on Becker's best surface and Lendl's worst

Well, if you swallow your own tripe, both of them *should* wish to
trade careers with Lendl, since Lendl scores 33 on your vaunted 7543
system, while Becker has only 32 points, and Edberg a mere 30. And you
can't argue that a sentimental preference for Wimbledon justifies
their not swapping with Lendl, because a substantial bias in favor of
Wimbledon is already built into 7543.

In the rational universe, Lendl is clearly a cut above both Becker and
Edberg. Yes, Wimbledon is the most coveted title, but that can't
overcome a two-slam difference and Lendl's huge advantages in weeks at
no. 1, titles won, surface versatility, and general domination.

Interestingly, Lendl is a good example of a player who was "owned" by
a lesser great in big matches -- 0-3 vs. Becker in slam finals
(although Lendl had a slight edge in the overall head-to-head).

Why was Becker 14 weeks as #1 and Lendl 270 weeks?

Obviously Becker couldn't get up for tune-ups to get most points because
it adds nothing to his legacy.

Any great who really wants to rate has to put in some ohenomenal
performances in slams - Lendl's are tier 3 by all time standards.

No point pretending otherwise.

no point pretending Sampras was anything but LAME on clay either but
you still do it.

He lost 4 finals. He was not good enough to win 81 FO. Borg was
clearly superior to him. But he put a brave fight. He played badly in
both 82 and 83 USO and should not have lost them. Connors bullied him
in both. He also should have not lost 83 AO to Wilander. But I am sure
he didnt give a f about AO, then.

It's not the quantity, it's the quality - otherwise you'd have Whisper and
Hazelgoat as the Tier-I's.

Use google to search - you'll see he gives Lendl his deserved dues for
ushering the era of power baseline tennis.

The 'dues' Lendl deserves have ne bearing on the quality of his
achivements (7543) - in a historical sense he is clearly tier 3 great
with 33 points. There is no basis to upgrade him to tier 2 based on
intangibles. Ask yourself would even Becker/Edberg swap careers with
him, & he with them?

Lendl was more of a mental player, lost 5 finals before went to
winning a RG.

Don't be so hard to yourself, Raja. Lendl was a great player, but he
NEVER EVER dominated 89. Winning a couple of tune-ups, whilst losing
all important matches to Becker, Change etc. has nothing to do with
DOMINANCE!
