Comments from Toni Nadal after the AO final:

"The greatest of all is Rod Laver, after that the best is Federer"

"Federer is better than Rafa, better than any player. Rafa is a good
player, winning this trophy and five other [Slams]. But there is still a
big gap."

"I am surprised that Federer in the fifth played not very good. I don't
what happened, maybe his concentration or the possibility to have 14
Grand Slams, I don't know. I am sorry for Roger."

Surprising and appealing comments.

PS.

He's very good at not letting complacency get to his camp. He's
reminding his nephew to not let his guard down and yet putting the
pressure on Federer. He's playing mind games.

Both explanations hold merit and they don't bite each other. Toni is
respectful of Federer and may or may not believe Federer was 'better'
that night but can still rightfully believe Federer is the better
*tennis player*. This does not mean Federer's a better or more
effective *match player* and certainly not at this moment, nor does it
indicate Federer 'should have' or 'deserved to have' won the AO
final.

He didn't have to lie or play mind games to make the statement he
made, but it is a generous and kind remark toward Federer *and* can
work well to keep Rafa motivated and stop him from thinking he's there
yet.

I never said I believed his statements, only that they were made in
good faith. You naturally wouldn't see the distinction.

It's a pity... Feddy's fans are trying to hang on to puny hand-outs
uncle Tony is dishing out to save some face.

Bit different to Djokovic & his parent's opinions - they always think he
is better than Fed.

I wouldn't get into any of the GOAT stuff, but every one knows that
Federer played an awful fifth set after four sets of his worst serving
ever. And yes, the pressure of having 14 slams was huge.

Congratulations to Nadal, he is a great athlete.

I know the Gods will smile again to Federer.

The obvious explanation for this would be mono - it has been for the
last year why change it now?

No the obvious explanation for this is he serve badly and mono is not an
excuse
for his poor serving. He had mono last yar unless Nadal BS artist like
yourself like to
twist around the truth.

This is what makes the Nadal family so exceptional. They do not gloat
and always try to make their opponents feel better. This time, Nadal
was clearly the better player but Uncle Toni may have been referring
to Federer's total record compared to others. Very decent of him to
speak so well of Federer.

Uncle Toni is wrong. Nadal was better than Federer on Sunday. He's
been better than Federer many times in the past.

I don't like reading this from Toni but I think he was so upset with
Roger's breakdown that he felt he had to say it. It's wrong though -
and he should give more credit to his nephew and what he was able to
accomplish.

Geez - that kind of pisses me off! lol.

I think Toni got it, like he's gotten so many things, dead right.
Federer outplayed Nadal, and likely should have had it in 4. Nerves
and the stranglehold Nadal has on Federer's mind turned the match for
him.

No he did not. Nadal had bigger percentage of 2nd serves won so he was
stronger from the baseline.

I wonder if you think in your tiny brain that you just made an argument?
Keep on talking crap and lying and avoiding actual arguments...you're
doing well at it.

I agree. Nadal is the mentally stronger player, clearly.

It sounds like Uncle Toni is patronizing Roger, which
i don't think is necessary. Roger ain't #1 no more.....

That just showed what an idiot you are. If Nadal was better than Federer
from the first
time they played why didn't Nadal win 11 slams between 2004 to 2007 ? He
was better
than Federer would obviously mean he had more success at slam than Federer.
5 years
younger is not answer or a reason in saying he was better than Federer since
they played
the first time 5 years ago. Idiot like you and TT don't have the basic
reading skills.

No it's you who is the idiot lacking reading skills here. I didn't talk

Yes. Nadal has been better than Federer from the very first time they
played.
Nadal would have been all this time #1 winning most of the titles and
slams if clay events would have had position of hc events during atp year.

Typical TT Boy rubbish. If Nadal was better than Federer from the first
time
they played then why did it take more than almost 5 years for him to win a
hard
court slam and in that time Federer already won 7 grand slams on hard court
along ?

You did not understand what I said. Switch places with clay and hc
events and try to think what had happened during their careers.

Jesus, have a more preposterous what-if? Say, let's switch all the circuit to
carpet and Sampras wins the CYGS in his peak years?

Fed's fragile ego needs massaging after his tears on Sunday.
