I was very surprised nobody had said anything in over 4 hours since
Whisper's 2nd post but I knew it couldn't last much longer ;)

I figured rst had evolved to the point we can preempt the next few
exchanges & realize it would come to obvious conclusion, thus saving b/w.

I thought about it, but it didn't sound good after first 3 seconds.
Whisper will answer that you are dickheads to compare Müller to
Sampras and in this case he is right. Müller is not very good in other
areas than serve.

Correct. I see Sakari has evolved to a higer level analyst & doesn't
ask questions he knows the answer to.

As long as you don't start calling me a tier 1 analyst. I would take
that as an insult.

I don't think anyone is comparing Muller's overall game to Sampras' but
Whisper's comments clearly apply to some of Sampras' matches.

Whisper will call anybody a dickhead at some point or another so I wouldn't
worry about it. Especially since it appear to like dicks, at least going by
the many classic symptoms of repressed cases in that department. But hey, I
don't mean being judgemental.

There's a difference, though - it's 6-4 to Sampras thanks to all aces,
unreturnable serves... and backhand winners.

The difference is Sampras didn't need the serve to win whereas Muller
clearly did.

Sampras clearly did need the serve to win matches. You've as much as said it
yourself many times.

Except when someone else said it to point out that Sampras "serve saved his
bacon", then he'd go back to trolling, like today.

Sure, but it wasn't intended to characterize all of Sampras' wins, only some
of the close ones without which his record would probably not be what it is.
It wasn't an exceptional occurence that Sampras' aces and unreturnable
serves saved his bacon.

Why?

Muller is known as a serve and volleyer who is not great off the
ground - he's also a journeyman player. If Tomic is going to be a
great player then his groundstrokes are probably going to have to be
better.

Muller is pretty good - he really should have done better than he has.
If Tomic were 18 it wouldn't be as big a deal, but 16 come on!

As I suggested in the previous post, not breaking serve with a 0-40
lead and another BP has cost him.
Berny was broke to love in the very next game... Muller starting with
an ace, now leading 40-0 after a clever dropshot.
In less than 5 minutes, Tomic is now running after a break of serve,
facing ANOTHER BP wich icould gave Muller a 5-2 lead in the third.

Share & Enjoy,
Manolo

Muller's serve is saving his bacon - Tomic is far better off the ground
& overall talent. It's not even close.

Serve isn't a part of the game, and doesn't require talent?

6-4 to Muller thanks to all aces & unreturnable serves.

I'm amazed how much better Tomic is off the ground than Muller at 16 -
mind blowing. This kid could be top 10 next year.

WOW, what a spectacular turn around from Whisper since I read this forum. I

Tomic is not much of a returner yet. That is something he needs to
improve. But you are right - apart from the serve Tomic is by far the
better player.

PS.

I don't know how you can say he is by far the better player. It is logical
that
better player win matches or at least close of winning a match. I know the
guy has some talent but it is just ridiculus out say he is a better player
than
Muller, he is not and certainly not right now. Potentially he will be
better
but that is different.

Muller's serve would explain him holding serve, but how does it explain Tomic
not holding/Muller breaking so often? Honest question. If Tomic is so much
better off the ground and his serve isn't too good, I'd expect the rallies
start from a neutral position (kinda like when Nadal just rolled them in back
in 2005) and the player with better groundies have the edge there. Too many
errors from Tomic?

Just a little inexperience - not used to playing 5 set matches & when to
maintain intensity etc. Make no mistake Tomic won't have any weaknesses
by age 18. He's really ripped some amazing return winners, served big
aces, good net play\volleys & is mentally hellbent on winning slams.

Critical factor here : he's just 16.

Thanks. By 18 I guess I'll be getting coverage of his matches. :)

You can tell Tomic's serve is going to be a monster very very soon.
He's still a little gangly due to growth spurt but his touch is very
impressive.

Should we take that as second best to Sampras ?

Please clarify as to when and where that will happen o sage of
Newcastle.

And there the match was over. Tomic lost his serve in 4th set.

Did I say that Tommic was panicking?
I keep saying that Berny better not go to a 5 setter... Even he's
young, even in front of a friendly crowd (to say the least).
He had a 0-40 lead, and another BP on the first Muller' serve game...
And lost that game, no longer junior... Will cost him more than what
he was used to, when he aws "a baby".

Share & Enjoy,

Too easy...
Wasn't he a baby few month before the french, winning the AO?
By the way, you got your answer:
Muller won the second set 6-1

While I was posting the previous one, Muller took a 5-1 lead in the
second set, he's to serve.
Tommic better finish him in 4, not trying to fight back for the second
set, for I have much more confidence in Muller fitness to play 4th &
5th sets...
I feel more and more Muller is finishing his warm up: no big surprise
to have a slower start after a long previous match...

Tomic is not panicking - he dropped 2nd set 1-6 in 1st rd too.

I didn't expect Tomic to win in straights, just having a dig at Vari who
didn't think Tomic could take a set.

That set must have been paid for by the Australian Tennis Federation
no ?

You're an old RSTer, you should know how badly "tier-1 analyst" words
are.
I saw Tomic last year at the french, took few pictures form his lost
to some player from argentina (1/8 or 1/4F Junior).
He showed no signs of riot against himself, yet he was completely
outplayed.
Maybe he's just not at ease with clay moves.
I was hoping to see some high potential next player, only saw pretty
usual stuff.

Today, he reminds me a lot of Korda, the way he's dressed (wearing a
white shirt doesn't help him much: looks skinnier than he might be),
dark hair without much of a aircut... Only let tall (or looking less
tall for having more muscles, and larger shoulders)

Last year he was a baby, but it does take some pretty good tennis
insight to spot potential at that age.

ok .... put your lack of reputation on the line .....

1. how many slams will he win ?

2. who will he be on steroids ?

3. will he be lame on clay ?

4. will he have nuclear volleys ?

5. will he be great at the net ?

You are already on record as saying his serve will be second to none
with none=sampras right ?

Go on .... let us have it ... we will file it in the rst cornerstone
to either embarrass you royally or praise you globally in 10 or 20
years time.

The guy has some potential but he has a lot of weakness he needs to work on.
Serve, for his height he just spins the serve in with little placement, spin
and
speed variation. Ground stroke when he is on he can be very good but the
forehand is too flat just like eastern Eruopeans like Czchs or Slovaks and
needs a bit more top spin to control the shot, backhand is pretty good with
an OK slice backhand. Mobility is certainly another area needs improving.
But I will be very surprise that he will not be top 10 sometime in his
career
but I doubt he will win many slams.

Sure, but at this point in time it is a massive deal.

16 yrs & 3 months playing his 3rd career match - wow.
