I don't think that is the reason. She has to play doubles with her
sister later in the day. That's why she plays the first match.

actually, i imagine serena is getting screwed by ESPN. the order of play
says specifically that her match won't start before 9:30 pm EST, which
is right when ESPN2 begins their coverage tonight.
