dimitrov takes the first set. still expect simon's experience to see
him through here. this kid is a real talent - most exciting we've seen
in years. reminds me a little of pete - dimitrov that is not simon ;)

That's strange - Dimitrov served big against Nadal last week and
seemed to have a pretty big delivery

According to the commentator Dimitrov generally played better against
Simon than against Nadal, but I think he served a bit weaker. I am
pretty sure he can serve much better than he did against Simon.

PS.

My initial impressions are that he's a very, very polished player for
his age. Great footwork, balance, super solid
off both sides (he was winning 20 ball rallies against Simon), great 1-
hander, forehand needs to become a bigger weapon. His movement may
not be Federer level but it's still very good. He didn't volley much,
but he hit one b/h volley that looked very natural, almost exactly
Pete's technique on that side.

The glaring problem at least in this match was the lack of a huge
serve. I think he had 3 aces in what 14 or so service games. You
mentioned Sampras and clearly even when Pete was 18 he just had a
massive bomb. I remember that match against Wilander at USO and even
back then deep in the fifth set he was just lethal with that weapon.
On the other hand, Dimitrov has a nice motion, uses his knees well, so
there's a lot of potential for improvement in that area.

*Choking* is a sign of how bad you want to win, so that's not nearly
the biggest flaw.

Look at Lendl. He was known for being a choker early in his career and
before it's over he turns out to become
an all-time great.

What's a much bigger problem in a young player is the fatal flaw of
contentment, like we see in Gasquet. The fact he hasn't achieved more
in the game doesn't really seem to burn him up enough inside.

seemed to tire badly at the end - think it was more physical than
mental

like his prospects.
just hope he doesn't turn out to be a "Choker..."

besides someone playing the backhand with one hand is always welcome!

Dimitrov has got a lot of hype around him like Gulbis had last year.

he looks very physically mature for 17 - more so than federer at the
same age but not as much as nadal. he's not as smooth and elegant as
federer (i know, i know discussion of the game's aesthetics are
forbidden in rst!) but may be more powerful. something of the way he
carries himself reminds me of pete - he has the same incredibly long
arms. he looks to have a lot of kick on his second serve. if this kid
doesn't crack top 5 and win slams it'll be a real disappointment.
hopefully he'll get a wild card for wimbledon - but probably the aec
will give them all instead to hasbeens and brit neverwillbes.

He is the junior champion last year, so he might get a wild card. Not
sure what is their policy.

Dimitrov has a WC in the qualifiers draw at Wimbledon and USO this year.

I would think there is a chance he will rise so much in the rankings
that he won't need a wildcard for qualifying. I wonder what they will
do then.

He should try to get a WC in ATP events which are not so packed with top
players. So far he has met Berdych, Simon and Nadal. Not particularly lucky.

PS.

He is an impressive prospect. How do you see his overall athleticism
though, especially
comparing him with the likes of Sampras, Fed, Nadal? You started it by
throwing out one of
the big names ;-)

He lost finally after some choking in the end. Overall I thought it was
a pretty good chance for it to happen, even at 30-0 serving for the match.

To me he has pretty much everything, apart from tournament experience.
Serve, volley, approach shots, slices, defense. He has it all. Sometimes
his footwork is a little bit sloppy, but in general I think it is superb
for a 17 year old youngster. He had 5-2 in that third set and would have
won this match with some more experience under his belt. Unfortunately
he didn't serve particularly well when he needed to. In all the
important games he served quite poorly.

Compared to Federer I think he has a much stronger weapon with his
backhand. And his height makes it easier for him to become a great and
consistent server. His forehand reminds me actually a bit about Roger,
but Roger can (so far) do a lot more with it. Dimitrov is a great
volleyer and also in this department all he needs is experience - shot
selection is not always the best.

PS.
