If Whisper is right, and the kids makes it big, more credit to him.
I think it is good for tennis to have some up and coming Aussies in
the mix.

People have been touting this kid for a while. And Australia is
drooling, naturally, given the paucity of native-born potential.

If the kid makes it big, credit will go to him. Whisper will ride him, a
la Roddick, and claim that he was right no matter how it all turns out.

How is his return of serve? Muller serves big...
It will be interesting to see how Tomic reacts.
Heck, Muller had a big US Open.
It will be interesting to see if he can follow up on his big step
there and put together a run in Australia.

Lots of excitement in the early rounds.

Look it's early days, but to me I get a sense he could do anything & is
just feeling his way onto the main tour & getting his bearings. If he
played his best right now he would do way better than Seppi did v Fed
last night - he has bigger shots & a confidence so would be hard to push
around. Of course 'doing his best' involves lots on intangibles that
should confound him (big occasion, inexperience etc), but perhaps the
ignorance of youth could help him?

He's a real talent & the game could really use him right now - still
hard to believe he's 16.

Tomic in his interview said that the S-V style bothers him. Sakari
Lund's observations of the WImbledon match against Kontinen bear that
out too.

Becker at Wimbledon 1984 was 16 & 7 months when lost 3rd rd to Scanlon -
actually he looked like he was going to beat Scanlon but broke his ankle
& had to retire. Tomic is younger at 16 & 3 months.

Oh yeh and i don't know if you know but Muller beat feliciano lopez in
the first round in the longest AO singles match EVER the score was
6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 4-6, 16-14 - 5 hours 34 minutes

so he is going to be absolutely fried--- chance for tom to get to rnd
3 and get thumped by del potty.

Lets not get too carried away though wispy, starace literally is the
biggest mug on HC ever. The guy has never been past the first round of

Hardly a prediction that can be claimed by one person, Tomic has been
in the press in Australia for years, part of our desperation for a new
talent.

But that's because Whimpy always touts Australians. He even touted
young Hewitt.

I think Aussie media did a big hype about Tomic when he was 13-14.
Whisper read those stories, and told us about it, so I guess that
makes him a Tier I analyst. Similarly if Kontinen makes it big, then I
knew before all of you...

I knew a bit more than what the media said, but the media is always
hyping someone & most of it's crap. This kid was different from the start.

Kontinen is a good junior but not in Tomic's class. Look at it this way
- all the greats eg Sampras, Fed etc had to play 'somebody' in juniors,
doesn't mean all those somebodies would follow them to the top. Tomic
has that rare ability.

I wish Kontinen all the best but don't see him doing that well on the
main tour.

I just said Becker, Hewitt & Tomic are the best 16 yr olds I've seen.
You're an idiot if you think I touted Hewitt just because he's an Aussie
- I take more delight in tearing down pretend wannabe's as that's what
most are.

A liked a lot of things - his instinct to step up & try to end the point
with a big attacking shot (seems to do it at will, which is a great
sign), lack of fear, & I keep harping on about his 'composure' but for a
kid who just turned 16 it can't overstated.

Still it's only his 1st real match, but I think he's going to surprise a
lot of people big time very soon.

He's not scared of coming to the net & bumping off the volley - did it a
few times. What I liked about that match is his composure - had the air
of a 10 yr veteran, no rushing yet always looking to end the point with
a big winner.

The score wasn't a real indicator of the difference between the 2 -
Tomic was a lot better than him on the court. He led 4-2 in the 1st, &
even in the 2nd he lost 1-6 he had so many game points to make it almost
even.

The last 2 points of the match were inspirational - Starace hit a very
deep approach shot to his bh that stayed low & landed on the line & he
simply rifled an amazing winner dtl, & then another wrong footer to end
the match.

He's always talked big about having the best parts of other player's
games eg Fed's groundies, Sampras' mind etc - good to see him having a
good go.

Didn't Muller win a few 5 setters on his way to the US Open Quarters?
If I remember right, he played a tough 4 setter, then 5 sets against
Haas, 5 sets against Almagro and then 4 sets with Davydenko.

Now, 5 sets in the Aussie summer are going to drain anyone, but he has
shown he can stay out there a long time and win.

Should be a very interesting match up.

The kid is from Brisbane so the heat won't bother him.

ok not sure if ur being sarcastic or not....care to explain?

Haven't ever watched the kid play but he already has achieved
something no one ever has at the Australian Open

youngest 1st round winner ever! Hewitt was younger but he lost his 1st
match back then

His bh down the line is a cannon & he's very confident. He has great
poise for a 16 yr old & looked very relaxed the whole match - not
rushing, just sussing out his opponent & going for the big shot quite
often. Pretty amazing for his 2nd match ever on the pro tour (1st was
last week's loss to Verdasco in Brisbane). Starace was ranked 25 just
17 months ago. The way he played huge pressure points is amazing - eg
the way he saved 2 set points in 4th set puts flakes like Gasquet to shame.

It's very early days & the kid can possibly go off the rails mentally
etc, but he definitely has the game & potential to be no.1 within 4 yrs.
When you look at juniors for possible slams/No.1 you look for poise &
big shots - can't do it without the big shots, & Tomic has it.

To put his youth in perspective he can become youngest ever USO champ
(Sampras' record) if he wins it in either 2009, 2010 or 2011.

He's the best 16 yr old I've seen since Hewitt, & could easily be better
as he has more weapons - need to watch how he develops & builds on his
experience through the year. Becker, Hewitt & Tomic are the best 16 yr
olds I've seen.

Muller played a marathon 5 set match so the kid has a shot at winning
his next match.

I watched a Tomic match once on video, playing the junior championship at
Wimbledon I think, and I think he lost that, but Tomic does have definite
ability.

In fact I'd say in terms of "talent" he seems to have *something* and it's
fairly rare for me to say anyone out there has tennis "talent" nowadays,
though I'd say others are Murray a bit and a lesser amount in Djokovic. Of
course Federer has some (not tons though, but some). Nadal, not
particularly (other than maybe in sprinting ability??)

So I was impressed with Tomic's "relaxation" on the court, though that
doesn't express it. He did not get bothered and stayed very fluid. Unlike
say a Nadal, who starts the fist-pumping, matador business and all that
nonsense. The neanderthal style you could say. But this goes beyond
behavior, I'm talking about the guy's way of relating to his ball and his
racket, and the way he was in this very calm place about it. Let's say the
zen of tennis. Let's say McEnroe had that. Nadal clearly does not have
that, he's just muscling almost everything. Federer has it somewhat.

And Tomic had something there. I thought he was **way** more talented than
the guy across the net, who I believe won, but whose shots were just the
garden variety modern garbage (Kontinen, that's it, just saw Sakari's post).
Tomic is modern garbage superficially, but it's the something else
underneath that I'm talking about. He also had some ability to end points
at net as I recall, but this wasn't a key part of his appeal (like say with
Murray, this is a bigger part of the appeal for me). I was entirely pulling
for Tomic.

Hmm, that's some assessment.

That's interesting. Definitely not happening this year I'd say though.
Outside shot at next year I'd say, so I guess it would likely have to be
2011.

Tomic is definitely interesting and I think it's great that he won a match
at a grand slam. Tennis always needs new young stars and now we've got
Murray, Djokovic and perhaps Tomic coming up. Talent fulfilling potential
is always great news.

Yes, he has all that. Actually his coolness reminds me of the way young
Sampras handled himself at '90 USO. He has that relaxed explosiveness &
confidence in his own abilities.

Saw some of Tomic match today (mainly the end), and I was thinking how
easily Kontinen beat him at Wimbledon. Probably Henri's s/v tactic
confused Tomic, you probably don't see a lot of that at juniors. And
he is over two years younger, he has most likely improved a lot since
last summer. His backhand did look good today. Serve looked a bit
weak.

BTW, I was at Henri's press conference last week. He has had wrist
injury, hasn't been able to play since October. Now just started
hitting, and might return to competitions in February. Too bad we
don't have a slam to give him a wild card...

He was only 15 so I wouldn't read too much into that. He was youngest
ever junior GS champ when he won AO last yr. He played like a seasoned
pro today & really the score was flattering to Starace - I'm still
amazed a kid could match it with a 10 yr veteran like that in his 1st GS
match - woulda been the biggest crowd he's played in front of. Sure
Starace doesn't have any really big guns, but he's a typical claycourter
who gets everything back & doesn't make a ton of errors. I always got
the sense Tomic held a lot in reserve & could easily step it up - he
needs a good coach to take him to the next level. I think a few months
with Annacone would be very positive move for him, but then he has
plenty of time.

His dad seems to be pretty smart guy - eg says there's no way he'd work
with Roger Rasheed as he's just a fitness coach & knows nothing about
the game. This is obvious when you listen to Rasheed's comments on tv -
nice guy but I don't know why he pretends to know tennis? Clearly he
knows fuck all.

Yep, and Muller isn't exactly a hotshot - will go down as a trivia question
(home favorite Roddick lost in USO05 R1 to...)

It's obvious he's not being sarcastic. He does have a great bh, especially up
the line, and hits pretty flat on both sides. His play is more like that of an
18 or 19yo. He looked like he belonged.
